PAGE FOUR THE CLARION October 13. 1957 Tusculum Is Tornado Homecoming Prey Tennis Team Ends Fall Practice The Brevard College tennis team ended fall practice, Oc tober 11, and although Brevard lost its three top players last year, including the Conference Doubles Champions, Larry Smith and Herb Rehberg, this could be a fine season for the team provided all members working out this fall return to play in the spring. The players out this year show more overall depth and potential than last year’s' team at the same time of the year, although Brevard ended up with the best tennis season in the history of the school last spring. The toughest opponent in the Conference should still be Anderson Junior College who won the Conference last year and gave Brevard their only defeats. Anderson is re ported to be even stronger this year. Richard Marvin and Steve Williams will probably be bat tling for the number 1 position. Williams could well be the best player in the Conference by his sophomore year, and shows much promise as a freshman. Marvin has improved greatly over last year, and has all the strokes necessary to give the opponent a tough match. Pete Skarinka is a returning Sophomore who is also playing much better than last year. The most improved player on the team is Tommy Andrews, a freshman. His game has de veloped in leaps and bounds during the fall practice ses sion, and Tommy will be see ing quite a bit of action in the future if this improvement con tinues through the spring. Another freshman that is showing a lot of promise is Jer ry Sexton. Jerry has a strong forehand and is capable of be coming a fine player. Steve Huggins, a sophomore, is the sixth player out for the team. Huggins could be a big help to the team if his strokes can be come steadier by next spring. Main Team Defeats Wingate Brevard bounced back from their disappointing loss to Clem- son, to shut out Wingate, 3-0, behind the outstanding defense of Bob Johns, and goals by Mai- colm Carsten and Randy Ward. iCarston scored the initial goal in the first period on a rebound from a shot by Dave Mullis. In a game of good de fense by both teams, this was the winning goal for all intents and purposes. The rest of the first period was scoreless. The second period saw no change in the score. Both teams played excellent defense, with Brevard controlling the ball the majority of the time. The final two periods were featured by excellent scoring plays of Randy Ward. He boot ed home two goals to add in surance to Brevard’s lead. This was John’s first shut out, and the overall defense of Brevard looked greatly improv ed. They go into Saturday’s Homecoming game, with a 3-2 record, against Tusculum Col lege. They have defeated Tus culum 5-0 earlier this year in Tennessee. Homecoming Day should be a winning one!
