The Peace Corps has awarded
Br vard College a beautiful
S^kate of recognition m re-
fard to Brevard’s involvement
achievement in the Corps’
Sool Partnership Program.
The certificate is signed by
Jack Vaughn, Director of the
Peace Corps.
The School Partnership Pro
gram isa vital part of the work
of the Peace Corps. Basically,
the project involves building
a school in some remote area
of the world from funds raised
from the area and from the
school sponsoring the program.
The project was assumed by
Brevard College prior to the
Christmas vacation last year.
Funds were raised in various
imaginative ways. The entire
faculty and a majority of the
campus organizations conducted
the drive. Mrs. Sigmon and Mrs.
Craig donated their ‘Vhite
thumbs” and sold their bakery
delights. A faculty auction was
held — typing, home-cooked
meals, trips to the airport,
cookies, and bridge lessons were
all subjected to bids. A facul
ty talent show was held in ad
dition to a student talent show.
The dorms and the SGA provid
ed a dance and gave all pro
ceeds to the project. The West
minster Fellowship gave their
money from the concessions
stand at the sophomore carni
val for the program. However,
the goal of SIOOO had not been
reached. Local friends of Bre
vard College helped end the
campaign with a grand finale
They aided in raising the final
dollars to hit the goal.
Miss Bobbie Jean Nicholson
who was the “guiding light” of
the project, was greatly re
sponsible for its success. She
led the faculty and students in
a united drive for the money.
Received along with the cer
tificate was a letter from Mrs.
Brenda A. Brown, Director of
the School Partnership Pro
gram. In part, Mrs. Brown
wrote:
“We are pleased to forward
this certificate to you, as last
ing evidence of your achieve
ment, and as a reminder of the
gratitude of the people in your
partner community overseas
and of the Peace Corps.”
The school was constructed
near Sangare - Feramoozkham,
Iran during the summer. It
stands as a tribute to world
freedom and an aspiration for
World peace.
