PAGE FOUR THE CLARION November li, TORNADO WARNING! ROADRUNNERS WIN! BY MIKE BUMGARDNER Cagers Begin Season Brevard College Tornadoes open their 26-game schedule with the hosting of Gainesville Junior Col lege. The Tornadoes suffered only their second los ing season last year in 11 years under Coach Chick Martin. With a 12-14 mark, they finished 3rd in the Conference Tournament at Forest City. This year, 5 lettermen return along vi^ith a crop of talented freshmen. The prospects are not tall, and speed and good defense will be relied upon heavily. There are a multitude of guards this year. The speed afforded should help greatly in pressing sit uations. The lone sophomore guard returning is 6’2” Danny Denton. Denton is a fine outside shoot er and will be probably one of the starters. Another fine candidate is Gary Cross at 5’11.” An All - Con ference player from Nantahala, he is a good ball handler and driver. Mike Zeugner is a fast guard and a good jump er at 5’10.” His shooting and defense should help him push for a starting position. Robert “Bones” Clayton, 6’0” and a product of Brevard, should see plenty action along with Jim Groves, 5’10,” also of Brevard, Groves was all-conference last year for Brevard High . Corey Shea, 5’10,” is a strong driv ing ball player who may see some action. Joe “Newt” Vaughn at 5’10” needs some experience but shows great desire and hustle which is an overall feature of this yearns team. Most of the experience is in the backline. Three starters return. Arnold Nicholson, 6’3,” from Bre vard, is a good jumper and shooter and has improv ed greatly. Another returning starter is 6’2” Calvin Saunders. His rebounding and scoring are a big part of Brevard’s hopes. Paul Hendrix at 6’7” is the biggest man and probable center starter. His “getting up strong” will determine how Brevard fairs this season. Sophomore Mike Bumgardner, 6’4,” should see a lot of reserve action at forward. He neeup improve his defense somewhat. An out standing freshman iS §’2” Ronnie Vance^ His speed and shooting^ eye could h#lp film pus’n rGr ^ fi^t string positiott. Another freshman is 6’4” Dale J^aulk. Faulk is a good rebounder and needs only experience. Bill Pajrton is a strong 6’8” at center. His aggressiveness will be needed this year. The Tornadoes will use a continuity type of fense and tight man for man defense against a tough conference this year. BREVARD BASKETBALL ROSTER Name Pos. Ht. Soccermen Thrash Clemson i Thei, high flying Tornadoes handed Clemson their first de feat in soccer, 3-2, at Clemson. The first quarter was scoreless, and Clemson remedied that sit uation with a score in the sec ond period on a penalty shot. Bob Johns had left the goal area to picH up the ball. It Vt'osn’t in the t>enalty area, thereby preventing him from picking it up. He kicked it and connected with the leg of an opponent. He was called for playing the man instead of the ball, and the kick was awarded. Bernie Badiali booted home a fumble by Clemson’s goalie to make it 2-2 with six minutes left in the game. Then with 56 seconds left, in the most exciting play of the game, Brevard used their “blitz” play and rushed the goalie. The goalie once again made a costly fumble and Sam Robinson scored. Main St. Brevard Roadrunners captur ed the Western Carolina Junior College Conference last Friday overwhelming the other schools. There was an exceptionally large turnout as the boys tra- versed on a wet course. Bob Gray and Dave Fussell finish ed in their usual manner with first and second place respect ively. Ned Jones, Bob Julian and Mike Scurto followed right behind them. Coach Talley felt Gray would have again broken the course record if it wasn’t for the condition of the course and that the first mile was run too fast. The team as a whole ran much closer together in this meet than in the pre vious ones. This proved that the usual slower times have quickened considerably. Coach Talley has made the workouts much tougher lately and the results can be seen in the record book. With the tough er workouts and the times low ering with each meet, the boys stand a good chance of coming home from N. Y. with the laur els. The only problem is a Jun ior College from Arizona who tracks two very good runners. These boys’ times are five sec onds lower than Gray’s time. And their fifth man’s best time is twenty seconds lower than Brevard’s fifth man, Scur to. So with the extra efforts in practice and very good luck the results should be favorable. 18 saves in the game. It was noted that a number of former Brevard alumni were there cheering the Tornadoes.
