H^MEC^MING PAGE FOUR THE CLARION October n, 1868 Brevard Alumni Are Pursuing Athletic Careers DANNY DENTON Danny Denton, a former baseball and basket ball standout here at Brevard College, now has a new goal: to play Atlantic Coast Conference base ball at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Danny, after hitting .280 and .333 respective- ly during his two-vear stay at Brevard, accepted a scholarship offer last summer to continue his career as a slugging shortstop at UNC. He feels as though it will be a real challenge to make the Carolma squad and that tougher pitching will be the biggest obstacle that he will face. ★ ★ ★ DAVE FUSSELL Daive Fusseli, co-oaptadn of laBt year’s track team and cross oouinitry iteam, is s«ttinig the pace for the University of Mis- assippi runners this year. Dave, based on his performanices thus far in the season, is NO. 1 for Ole Miss. Daive was offered six full ;grant-in-aids and several i^r- itial grants uipon graduating from Brevard last spring. (Photo by Bruce Laudig) Intramural Results Announced Intramural fooitball for the week of Sept. 23 - 27 resulted in Green Basement defeaiting Green III, 36-0 on Monday. Tuesday saw Beam II down Green I and II by the score of 20-0. Taylor Basement beat Beam I, 14-0 on Wednesday. Thursday saw a real close con test as Beam III squeaked by Taylor II, 21-20. Friday’s game was even closer as the Day Students and Taylor I and II tied 26-26. For the week of September 30 through October 4, there was a high scoring game on Monday of that week in which Green Basement won over Beam II 41-34. Tayilor Basement shut out Green III by 18-0 on Tues day. Taylor Basement fashioned another ^ut out on Wednesday, defeating Green I and HI, 2S0. The Day Stuieniti broke into the win column on Thursday by downing Beam I, 27-7. The first scoreless game ®f the season was played on Friday with Taylor I and III battling to a 0-0 tie. Faculty — 2 points Sports Action ★ ★ ★ omecomin^ With the annual celebration of Homecoming only a day off, students, and especially the freshmen, may wonder why such emphasis is placed on Home coming and the two athletic events that are the afternoon’s main attraction. A sense of pride and getting involved in campus activities has a great deal to do with Homecoming, The athletic events, soccer, and cross country, are an integral part of becoming involved and being proud of Brevard College. Through athletic compe tition, either by participation or support, a student gets to do something for his school. By giving a lit tle extra effort and enthusiasm to the team, the stud ent whfo otherwise has no great athletic ability can really become a part of his team’s march to victory, or its agonizing slide to defeat. Either way. however, the person is a part. He now belongs. Whether he intends to or not he has become one of the countless thousands who now give a little of themselves to make Brevard College a better institution. With two such fine competitors as our cross country and soccer teams this year, no one should hesitate to risk a little enthusiasm for his school. Give a little of yourself. Brevard College needs you. «2)o The cross country team kept its unblemished record October 4 by defeating Wingate 40-18. Bob Gray again paced the road runners, ing the course record by posting a time of 14:04. Jim Fusseli finished second and also had a very goofl time with a 14:40 clocking. The team hosts Woffor dand Milligan here to morrow for the Homecoming meet. 'iJornacloeA i^ow ^udcuiutn The soccer team dropped its first game of the season October 5 with a 7-4 setback at the nano Tusculum. . « Scoring for Brevard was Ed Holder, Jim Combs, Cedric Guthrie, and a miscue by the oppo team, giving the Tornadoes a goal. , After this setback, the team should be to bounce back tomorrow for a good Homeco match against Wingate. — CAMPUS PICK UP?
