Participate In, Tutoring
Tutoring plays an important
part for many Brevard College
students. There are four types
of tutoring programs in this
area. There are two voluntary
programs which are for the low
income group and the elemen
tary school. The low income
group is under the direction of
the Western Carolina Commun
ity Action which derives mon
ey from federal funds. The
community worker or Vista
worker controls the activities
in this area. There are about
twenty-four Brevard students
involved in this group which
are associated with the Whit
mire and Rosenwald tutoring
projects. The major emphasis
IS personal contact and friend
ship which supplements the ed
ucational progress.
The elementary school tutor-
is under the direction of
the college and consists of ap
proximately twelve tutors,
“sre is a combination of both
personal contact and education
'''ith the main emphasis on
scademics. The American Ed
ucation 21 class also plays a

‘"terested.
"^he college students partici
pating in these programs not
only give but receive even more
than they give. In the low in
come group, it helps bridge
the gap between the have and
have nots. These students real
ize how fortunate they really
are and also understand the
needs of others. Pleasure is
gained by seeing the progress
of the child and by knowing he
sees you as a friend.
Anyone interested in the tu
toring program who feels
he has time to offer is urged
to see Mr. Tawney for further
information.

Flu Invitations
Accepted By Many
By Rod Jones
Invitations to attend an in
formal gathering at the infir
mary were sent out by the flu
this week and accepted by many
students and faculty members.
Festive activities in the infir
mary are suspected by those who
have observed the lights being
on until the wee hours of the
past few days. Those students
who are missing girlfriends and
boyfriends are advised to check
the Red Cross lists available at
the Brevard College community
hospital. Readers wondering

rejoice in the hope that Clarion
