BOSHAMER, the leading benefac tor of Brevard College, was honored at a luncheon last Saturday which was attended by students, col lege officials and trustees. It was followed by the dedication of the new addition to the Boshamer gymnasium. In the picture at the left. President Robert A. Davis is paying tribute to Mr. Boshamer, who can be noted with Mrs. Boshamer. There are four types of tutoring programs in this area. There are two voluntary programs which are for the low income group and the elemen tary school. The low income group is under the direction of the Western Carolina Commun ity Action which derives mon ey from federal funds. The community worker or Vista worker controls the activities in this area. There are about twenty-four Brevard students involved in this group which are associated with the Whit mire and Rosenwald tutoring projects. The major emphasis IS personal contact and friend ship which supplements the ed ucational progress. The elementary school tutor- is under the direction of the college and consists of ap proximately twelve tutors, “sre is a combination of both personal contact and education '''ith the main emphasis on scademics. "^he college students partici pating in these programs not only give but receive even more than they give. In the low in come group, it helps bridge the gap between the have and have nots. These students real ize how fortunate they really are and also understand the needs of others. Pleasure is gained by seeing the progress of the child and by knowing he sees you as a friend. Anyone interested in the tu toring program who feels he has time to offer is urged to see Mr. Tawney for further information. College To Hold "Religious Emphasis" Week, March 8-12 March 8 - 12 Brevard College will hold its annual Religious Emphasis Week. Dr. Russell T. Montoferd, Minister of Berk- head Methodist Church in Win ston - Salem will be the guest speaker for the week. This year will mark the eleventh consecutive observance of Religious Emphasis. The an nual event is one of the most important programs given at Brevard College. The service on March 8 will be held in the First United Methodist Church. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, there will be services held at 10 o’clock in Dunham Auditorium. At 11 o’clock Thursday, a com- munion service will be held. Speak Here At Brevard College Hailed as one of America’s outstanding Negro leaders by the NEW YORK TIMES, Dr. Eugene St. Clair CaUen- der will speak at Brevard College under the auspices of the Mutual Concert As sociation Monday, February 16th, in the auditorium of the Dunham Music Center. Since early 1968, Dr. Cal lender has occupied the post of Deputy Administrator of the Housing and Develop ment Administration for the City of New York. With his appointment to this post, Dr. Callender became the sec ond in command of Mayor Lindsay’s new super housing agency for New York. The present Housing and Development Administra tion takes the place of such former city agencies as the Housing and Redevelopment Board, the Rent Control Board, and the Department of Buildings. Among his many duties, Dr. CaUendar super vises building code enforce ments and fair housing in all government - aided middle income housing in New York City. Prior to hi: present posi tion, Dr. Callender was the Executive Director of the New York Urban League. His program to train and find jobs for Negro youths in Harlem, to establish narco tics clinics, and to discourage riots and other forms of vio lence attracted national at tention. Dr. Callender’s lecture will be presented at 8:15 p. m. Admission is by season mem bership cards in the Mutual Concert Association only. REMINDER! The annual Sweetheart Dance will be held this Saturday night from 8:30 to 12:30 P- in the new Boshamer Gym. The Original Drifters will be there and the price is $2.50 a couple. New Addition To Gymnasium Is Dedicated Students, faculty represeB- tatives, administrative officers and trustees gathered on tlie Brevard College campus Sat urday, February 7th to pay honor to Cary C. Boshamer, one of the college’s most generous benefactors Mr. Boshamer, a Gastonia in dustrialist and member of tb« board of trustees at the local college since 1954, was honor ed at a testimonial luncheon held in the Albert G. Myera Dining Hall Saturday afternoon. Tributes were delivered by Ken Eaton, president of the Student Government Associa- tion, Chick Martin, athletic director and head basketkall coach, Gil Coan, an alumnus of the college and member of the board of trustees, A- len H. Sims, chairman of the board of trustees, and John I. Anderson, editor of The Transylvania Times, and a member of the trustee ath letic committee. Approximately 180 people at tended the luncheon, which was followed by a dedication serivce of the new women’s gymnasium. Mr. Boshamer had provided funds for the con struction of Boshamer Gym nasium in 1962 and for the addition to the athletic facility in 1969. The new women’s gym nasium includes another reg ulation - size playing floor, four faculty offices, lounge, film room and classroom. In addition, new equipment for gymnastics and weight train ing were added. Mr. Boshamer was guest of honor Saturday evening at the Brevard - Montreat - Anderson basketball game where he saw the Tornadoes establish four new school records as they blasted the visiting Cavaliers 139-65. Dr. Eugene St. Clah: Callender Flu Invitations Accepted By Many By Rod Jones Invitations to attend an in formal gathering at the infir mary were sent out by the flu this week and accepted by many students and faculty members. Festive activities in the infir mary are suspected by those who have observed the lights being on until the wee hours of the past few days. Those students who are missing girlfriends and boyfriends are advised to check the Red Cross lists available at the Brevard College community hospital.
