Inauguration
Of Rev. Davis
Set For May 2
Inauguration ceremonies of
ficially installing the Rev.
Robert A. Davis as sixth presi
dent of Brevard College will be
held Saturday, May 2 on the
campus of the Methodist - re
lated junior college.
Chaplain C. Edward Roy,
chairman of the inauguration
committee, announced that the
inauguration would take place
at 2:30 p. m. in Boshamer Gym
nasium and would be followed
by a reception at 4:00 in the
James Addison Jones Library.
An inaugural luncheon for trus
tees, official delegates, special
guests of the college, and their
wives will precede the cere
monies at 1:00.
President Davis assumed of
fice at Brevard on June 1, 1969,
succeeding the late Dr. Emmett
K. McLarty, Jr. A native of
Broxton, Georgia, he received
the B.B.A. degree from the
University of Georgia and the
B. D. degree from Emory Uni
versity. Studying as a Danforth
Scholar, he earned the S.T.M.
degree from Yale University.

is served as director of the
Wesley Foundations at Virignia
Polytechnic Institute and the
Georgia Institute of Technol
ogy, and was an associate di
rector of the Division of Higher
Ruby Holbrook In One-Man Show, Monday
RUBY HOLBROOK
A talented actress with a
background in both classical
and modern drama will present
a one-man show of drama and
music Monday, April 13th, at
Brevard College.
Ruby Holbrook will present
her show as part of the Mutual
Concert Association Series at
8:15 p.m. in the auditorium of
the Dunham Music Center. Ad
mission is by season member
ship only.
Born in St. John’s, New
foundland, Miss Holbrook
studied at Denison University
and with the celebrated Uta
Hagen in New York. She has
been associated with many of
the nation’s leading repertory
and stock companies, playing
over 80 roles.
She appeared as Elizabeth in
the Phoenix Theatre’s produc
tion of “Abe Lincoln in Illi
nois,” and with the New York
Shapespeare Festival, where
she was featured in “Electra.”
During two seasons at the
Great Lakes Shakespeare Festi
val, her roles included Queen
Margaret in the three parts of
“Henry VI,” Titania in “A Mid
summer Night’s, Dream,” the
nurse in “Romeo and Juliet,”
Mistress Page in “The Merry
Wives of Windsor” and Volum-
nia in “C'oriolanus.” During
three seasons at Princeton’s Mc
Carter Theatre, her roles in
cluded Emilia in “Othello,”
Queen Margaret in “Richard
III,” Lady Britomart in "Major
Barbara” and Mrs. Malaprop in
“The Rivals.”
She toured for five years with
Hal Holbrook in a two-person
show comprised of scenes from
the lives of famous personali
ties, giving portrayals including
Elizabeth Barrett Browning,
Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Vic
toria and the reporter in an in
terview with Mark Twain.
This past summer Miss Hol
brook appeared at The Olney
Theatre, Olney, Maryland.
Phi Theta Kappa
Has New Members
The Phi Theta Kappa Socie
ty, sponsored by Mrs. Beard,
tapped new members Wednes
day morning, April 8, 1970, at
the 10:00 assembly. Bill Blan
ton, President of the society,
spoke a few words concerning
the organization in general. The
new members were then pre
sented with a yellow carnation.
The new members are as fol

Jewish Rabbi To Speak Here

On April 15, 1970, at 6:30 p.
m., Dr. Israel J. Gerber will
be speaking at Brevard College.
Dr. Gerber received his B. A.
degree from Yeshiva Univer
sity in New York and his Ph.
D. from Boston University in
1950. He was ordained at He
brew Union College-Jewish In
stitute of Religion in 1941.
Rabbi Gerber is the spiritual
leader of Temple Beth El in
Charlotte, North Carolina, and
previously served congrega
tions in Massachusetts and Ala
bama.
Dr. Gerber also teaches a
Resident Lectureship sponsor
ed by the Jewish Chautauqua
Society at the University of
Nor^ Carolina at Charlotte.

Dr. Gerber has written ar
ticles which have been pub
lished in a number of leading
magazines. He is the author of
THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE
SUFFERING MIND and THE
IMMORTAL REBELS.
The rabbi lectures on col
lege campuses under the aus
pices of the Jewish Chautauqua
Society. This organization
creates better understanding of
Jews and Judaism and is. spon
sored by the National Federa
tion of Temple Brotherhoods.
Glee Club Sings
The Brevard College Glee
Club presented a program of
sacred music in the sanctuary
of the First United Methodist
Church of Brevard, Wednesday,
April 8, at 6:30 p. m.
The numbers used on the
Glee Club’s spring tour, March
1 - April 7, were used on the
program.
During the eight day tour, the
group sang at Charlotte and
Misenheimer, North Carolina,
and in the Florida cities of St.
Augustine, Winter Haven, Mel
bourne, Vero Beach, Miami,
Delray Beach, and Jackson
ville.
In the April 8 program, the
Madrigal Singers, under the
direction of Miss Virgmia Til-
lotson, were featured in several
numbers. The entire program
was under the supervision of
Harvey H. Miller.
All - American rating was
awarded the CLARION by the
Associated Collegiate Press at
the University of Minnesota in
the 82nd All American Critical
Service. Approximately 600
newspapers from throughout
the United States were evaluat
ed.
Newspapers published from
September through December
were judged on coverage and
content, writing and editing,
editorial leadership, physical
appearance and photography.
Marks, of Distinction for su
perior achievement may be
awarded in each of the five
categories and a paper must
receive at least four such cred
its to be rated All - American.
The Clarion received Marks
of Distinction credit for super
ior accomplishment in content
and coverage, writing and edit
ing, editorial leadership, and
physical appearance. Rating of
First Class (excellent); Sec
ond Class (very good), and
Third Class (good) are given
on the basis of total numeri
cal scores achieved in the five
classifications.
