PAGE FOUR THE CLARION APRIL 16, 1971 Linksters Crush Their IM Softball Opponents Impressively \^j|| start Brevard College’s outstand ing golf team, directed by Wannamaker Hardin, has an excellent chance to go to the nationals this year. The team consists of the fol lowing returning lettermen; Tom Carpenter, David Holmes, Mark Repokis, Tiger Jordan, Don Dickey and Jim Webb. This year’s team also is made up of two outstanding fresh men players, Jim Martin and Marvin Davis. The team in previous play faced Spartanburg and received a heartbreaking loss of 307 Spartanburg and 308 Brevard. Tomorrow, Coach Hardin’s men will again make a bid for a win over Spartanburg to tie in conference play. This match will be held at Glen Cannon Golf Course, and as this is an all important match, the team members and Coach Hardin invite the students and faculty to attend the match. Play will begin at 10:30. The golf season will con clude with the Western Caro lina Junior College confer ence tournament to be held April 26 and 27 at Etowah Golf Course. Coach Hardin stated that the key to a shot at the nationals will be improvement as the season goes on, and consistent low scores. The team has won four of five matches and this past Tues day, April 13, participated in a three-way match with Lees McRae and Anderson. Results of matches played are as follows; and also the schedule for the rest of the season: Brevard 308 Spartanburg 307 322 Isothermal - 332 302 Wingate -- 317 315 Anderson __ 332 315 Berea College — — 359 April 19 UNC-Charlotte There April 22 Lees - McRae There April 26-27 Con. Tournament Etowah Ricky McClure Sig ns Basketball Grant-In-Aid Ricky McClure, a senior guard for the championship Pisgah High School basketball team, has signed a grant-in-aid with Brevard College. The 6’ 0”, 160 - pound playmaker was a contributing factor in the team’s success this past sea son. Ricky averaged 14 points with a goal acccuracy of over 60 per cent. Assistant basketball coach Larry Burch, who had scouted Ricky during the season, was very pleased with his decision to attend Brevard and com mented, “Ricky is definitely the type _student - athlete Bre vard is seeking. The improve ment he made from his junior to senior year demonstrates his dedication to the game. Although his play - making, ball - hawking, scoring, and general all - around fine play was overshadowed by Pisgah’s other outstanding players, I believe Ricky has the desire and ability to mature into a fine college guard. “His family background is excellent in regard to striving for the best education possible. He has had a fine coach in Scott Conner, so his fundamen tal knoweldge of basketball is sound. All this adds up to a fine prospect that I know Bre vard College will enjoy.” Burch went on to say that Brevard is also very interest ed in several other WNC play ers. “Bi'evard’s original phil osophy was to serve this part of the state, so we have made a concentrated effort to recruit in Western Carolina this year. I feel this will enchance the in terest in Brevard’s athletic program in the future. W. These four teams are the Day Students, Green Basement and II, Green I and III, and Taylor I and III. Beam and Taylor Basement and II have not yet registered for the competition. The competition is set up as a double round robin tournament, as was the volley ball competition. The team which compiles the most vic tories will win the softball championship. Green Basement and II have been labeled the preseason fav orites. They won the softball competition last year. They appear tp have much the same talented freshmen this season. The championship will not be won easily; however, Green I and III, Taylor I and III, and the Day Students have plenty of talent also. The softball champions will provide their team with more points in the overall intramural standing. Green Basement and II strengthened their hold on first place as they captured the volleyball championship last week. B.C. Tennis Team Falls To Anderson The Brevard tennis team traveled to Anderson Junior College last Wednesday after noon and suffered their fourth conference defeat of the sea son. Phil Hess, the Tornadoes’ number one man, also played very well in losing a close singles match. PATRONIZE OUR ADVERTIZERS AYERS Phone 883-4331 53 W.
