Yunker Places
46th In Nationals
Brevard, N, C. — Jerry
Yunker, a sophomore from
Lexington, Kentucky, was
Brevard’s only representative in
the National Cross Country
Championships held in Eugene,
Oregon on November 9th. Even
though Brevard’s team was
ranked in the top ten in the last
poll, the cost was a major factor
in sending only one individual to
Oregon. Since Yunker was
Brevard’s number one runner all
year, he deserved a chance to
compete at the National level.
Jerry Yunker covered the 5.1
mile course in 25:44 placing him
46th out of a field of 240 runners
and only 17 seconds away from
being an All-American. Last
year, Yunker finished 72nd.
The team title was won by
Southwestern Michigan with 44
points. The individual title went
to Jeff Jerele of Golden Valley
with a time of 24:32.3.
Congratulations
Little Yunker
Doug Johnson Forward-Guard:
6’ 03” 185 lbs.
Doug appears on our campus
after starring for Millbrook High
of Raleigh N. C., where he was
mentored in basketball by Coach
Don Hinton. He is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Sherrill C. Johnson and
majors in Liberal Arts. Doug has
the ability and smoothness to
become a credited star in
collegiate ranks yet must develop
a stronger motivation to the
game. His endeavors at Brevard
include his Associate degree and
spots on the tennis and basketball
teams.
Brian Jones Center; 6’ 05>/2” 215
lbs.
The son of Watson and Claire
Jones of Wake Forest, N. C.,
Brian is one of two returning
lettermen and a co-captain.
During his playing action last
season, the smooth captain
averaged 13.0 points and 9.0
rebounds a game while having
the duty of muscle man against
opposing centers, a chore he
faced admirably. His basketball
prowness was tutored by Coach
Doug Cobbs of Frederick
Military Academy which has
enabled “B” to become the
valuable asset he is today. This
was shown last season when
Brian was nominated to All-
Conference.
Brian is majoring in Liberal
Arts and will definitely be
playing at a four year institution
next year.
Timothy Jones Center; 6’ 06” 220
lbs.
Tim is a walk-on from Coach
Meyerhoff’s soccer class and
hails from Vienna, Virginia,
where he attended Flint Hill Prep
under the direction of Darell
Snyder. While in attendance, Tim
averaged 11.0 points and 10.0
rebounds a game his senior year
and made 2nd team honors in the
Tri-State League. His major is
Liberal Arts and Tim has aims to
succeed at Brevard as both a
student and a player.
Steve Kitterman Forward: 6’ 04”
190 lbs.
Steve (the Man) known about
the campus as “Animal,”
comes to the Tornados after
instructions by Harvey
Tankersle, coach of the' Eastside
High basketball squad in
Greenville, South Carolina. His
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard E.
Kitterman are extremely proud
of his All-Conference nomination
yet still believe the best is yet to
come. His goals are to score
grades capable of transfer to a
four year school and to be a
valuable asset in the Tornados
bid for a conference cham
pionship. There is little doubt that
the attributes Steve carry can
only assist the team’s wish.
David Wooten Guard: 5’ 11” 150
lbs.
The son of Jack and Dorothy
Wooten, Dave, of Cattlettsburg,
Kentucky, in Boyd County, enters
Brevard after glory filled years
at Boyd County High. There he
was mentored by Coach Brice
Thornbury and received
Honorable Mention All State,
made the All-Conference team as
well as the All-Area squad. His
senior averages were 16.8 points,
5.0 rebounds and 7.2 assists per
game.
His objectives to average 3.0 or
better in school, while majoring
in Physical Education, and a
conference championship.
Coach Meyerhoff and sup
porters believe “The Ken
tuckian” will be the spearhead in
a new 1-4 offense that could win
the top spot in our league. They
also believe the tobacco chewing,
gutty lad will break the current
assist record before half the
season passes, with his ball
handling wizardry.
