PROFILE:
Sam Cope
Mr. Samuel L. Cope, to those
who do not know, is the Associate
Professor of Music and Theatre
here at Brevard. He has a
Masters Degree in Music from U.
N. C. Chapel Hill and for the past
three summers has been working
on his Masters in Drama from the
University of Tennessee. His
thesis for the degree is basically
“Proper Planning Can Make It
Possible to Present a Successful
Musical with Inadequate Funds
and FaciHties.” Mr. Cope just
finished the research for his
thesis. The research was the
musical “Fiddler On the Roof”.
He held auditions, cast roles,
onrouted rehearsals, designed
sets, dilligently searched for
props, conducted the orchestra,
and finally directed the
presentation of the ever suc
cessful musical.
in a special Christmas Convocation at the Methodist
Church.
The learning lab is open from
8;00a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday
through Thursday. Friday’s
hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Mrs. Shays, the director, will be
glad to provide any assistance
needed in beginning the course.
Read With Speed
If you need to increase your
reading skills and com
prehension, you do not need to
pay $200 or $300 for a speed
reading course. Brevard is now
offering an individual study
course for those who wish to
improve their reading and
comprehension skills.
The course involves using the
reading machines in the adult
learning lab at 102 McLarty-
Goodson. Students are allowed to
come in at their own convenience
and progress at their own in-
dividul rate.
On December 10 at 7:30 p.m. a
special Christmas convocation
will be presented by the Brevard
College music department at 7:30
in The First United Methodist
Church of Brevard. At this time
the sanctuary will be tran
sformed into a place of beauty
through the practiced music of
Brevard College students. It is
required that the non-performing
students of Brevard College
attend this convocation. It is also
suggested that students wear
formal attire to enhance the
traditional atmosphere of this
convocation.
A program of sacred music
including Christmas carols and
religious anthems will be
presented by fifty-five glee club
members, thirty-five Brevard
band members, and sixteen
chamber singers.
Also, Bach’s “Magnificet”, a
religious coral concerning the
demise of Jesus Christ, will be
highlighted in the convocation.
The “Magnificet will be
presented by the Brevard Glee
Club and soloists to the ac
companiment of an organ and
harpsichord will be Kathleen
McGuire, Susan Torella, Laura
Funk, Brenda Tagert, Debbie
Deaton, and Madeline Sawyer.
The single male solists will be
Rick Eldridge playing the organ
and harpsichord will be Mrs.
Louise P. Miller. Harvey H,
Miller will direct the
“Magnificet, and Georgia
Henson, will assist.
Reading skills are essential for
success in college. A student
should read about 400 words per
minute with at least 80 per cent
comprehension.
It is suggested that students
interested set aside a certain
time of the day to come in and use
the machines. After only a short
time each day, a great deal of
progress can be made.
Virginia Tillotson will be
directing the Brevard band group.
All in all, the candles, the
strangely stirring, joyous,
uplifting music and the grand
atmosphere of the Methodist
sanctuary promise to bring about
the traditional sprit that the
students of Brevard will carry
into and through their Christmas
holidays. In essence. Merry
Christmas!
Mr, Cope, or better yet
“Daddy” Cope, truly deserves to
receive his M. A. in Drama after
all the work he put into, not only
this recent production, but five
previous musicals here at
Brevard, as well as one play,
three musicals at other colleges,
and a play at the Brevard Little
Theatre. He also deserves the
title of “Daddy Cope. No one
could ever attempt to match-up
to his charm, lovingness, and fun-
filled spirit. “Daddy” Cope
possesses a remarkable gift. He
has the power to make people feel
good. Even when he is upset or
mad, the lasting smile continues

to shine through his glowing eyes
rosy cheeks, and bright red hair;
and when he is happy the sen
sation of joy bursts forth.
A fact, not very hard to believe,
is that “Daddy” Cope’s talent
and personality will undoubtedly,
be carried on by his three
children, Debbie, Carol, and
Tony each possess their father s
theatrical talents as well as his
special gift of happiness; but how
could they miss, Mrs, Cope is
truly a perfect jewel herself.
This reporter would simply like
to say “thank-you” to the Cope
family for all you have done for
Brevard College, and especially
“good luck” to Mr. Cope or
should I say “break a leg , it s a
