Page Four THE CLARION November 7, 1975 Tornados Begin Basketball Practice Women’s Basketball Speeds Ahead Brevard, N.C. — Brevard College’s basketball mentor, John Meyerhoff, has begun preparation for the 75-76 basketball season with a squad of 16 players. The Tornado’s have completed two full weeks of drills, and Meyerhoff reports that prospects for this year’s team are exciting. Two of the sixteen are local Western North Carolina players; 6’ 5”, Mike Johnson from Tryon, and former Brevard High Blue Devil Dale Griffin. It’s still too early to tell where all the players will fit in, but both Griffin and Jackson have played well in early trials. Jackson will probably play the pivot position. He has rebounded very strongly and his open court play and defense have been better than expected. Griffin’s forte is his shooting, but he has hustled on defense too. He will split time at the point and wing positions as Meyerhoff shuffles through a wide array of possible combinations. “At this point. I’m trying to determine a starting five and three back up men,” says Meyerhoff. “I won’t make any final judgements until we’ve had several live scrimmages, but I’m already beginning to get some notions.” It doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to figure that two of this year’s starters should be last years conference leading rebounder Tom Horonzy (13.1 per game) and the conference’s top guard. Clay Alston, who averaged 16 points per game. As for the remaining three positions, its wide open. Along with Jackson, there have been strong performances from 6’ 7” Darnell Smith (Hillside High School,Durham) and 6’ 6” Ricky Shelton (Carrollton, Kentucky) at the pivot positions. At the wings, letterman Doug Johnson (6’ 3” Raleigh, Millbrook), Tom Brown (6’ 4” Summerville, S.C.) and Mike Creekmore (6’ 2” Great JEWELRY REPAIRS . STONE SETTING WE\r6 (JOT A 51T or , weae&B KE6 COUIttRX STORfe Bridge, Virginia) are all possible starters, as well as 6’ 4” Ben Harper from Hunter Huss who has terrific potential. In case Alston falters at the point position, Meyerhoff has 6’ 1” All- Starter from Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, Jim McWilliams who is playing well. Ron Parker (5’ 8” Wake Forest, N.C.) and Jerry Cant well (5’ 9”, Archbishop Malloy, N.Y.) are also pressing Alston at the point position. In addition, 6’ 3” high jumping Harvey Mull (Henryville, In diana) has shown excellent potential but needs experience. Don Edwards (6’ 5”, Herrod- sburg, Ky.) and Haze Green (6’ 6”, Staunton, Virginia) both have the versatility and ability to play the wing or post positions. On paper, the team shows excellent potential. Meyerhoff expects to use more pressure defenses and substitute more freely than he has in years. Roadrunners Win But Lose Brevard, N.C. — Brevard College Cross Country team, running their top freshman, Terry Wolfe, beat Carson Newman in a double dual by a score of 21 Vi to 30 1/2, but lost to Western Carolina by a score of 27- 30. Terry Wolfe, who ran as Brevard’s top runner at Stone Mountain, Georgia, injured his ankle and had to miss the meet. However, Brevard had four fine performances. Calvin Langford was Brevard’s first runner, placing 3rd behind two runners from Western Carolina. Calvin’s time was 26:44 for the 5 mile AUSTIN ART SHOP HE. Last year’s only returning player is Laurie Bradshaw a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia. Bradshaw has proved to be one of the stronger offensive and defensive players on the squad. Following Langford was Dave Comer, who finished 4th, Chuck Roberts in 5th place, and Jim Ivory in 6th place. All four men ran a fine competitive race. The matches were of the highest quality, and sportsmanship prevailed throughout the night with nary a paddle being tossed or broken. A wee, but highly audible, cheering section remained through the evening to see Doug Johnson capture the title, defeating Alex Cunningham. In the first match, Cunningham held the lead through the first half, till Johnson returned a slam that tipped the table for a 13-12 ad vantage. From there, until the victory, it was a nip and tuck battle that ended 21-19, Jonnson’s favor. The second game was just as exciting, if not more so, as Cunningham knew his back was to the wall. He scrambled time and again, returning everything that “Sweetpea” (Johnson’s nickname) could muster, and held on 21-19 to force the tie breaker. Both players used the pause for rest, but Johnson was catered to in a most prodigeous manner by his Coach, Jerry Cantwell, and Manager Clay Alston, which might have stirred Johnson to jump to victory 21-18. He seemed to have the final “in the bag” after a slow start of 20- 15, but Cunningham did not submit to Johnson’s bombarding slams till he drew to within two points. The strain of playing defense time and again then ran its course, and Johnson executed the death slam. Mrs. Louise Brackett presented the trophy to the winner. and spokesman for the Brevard Mutual Concert Association indicated today, “Strong public support for this series will help assure the continuance of ex cellence in our programs for coming seasons”.
