“For his already magnificent

The Brevard College Cross
Country team finished fourth in
the nation in the NJCAA National
Championship meet in Cham
paign, Illinois on Saturday,
November 11.
The Roadrunners were paced
by Jeff Wentworth and John
George who finished 14th and 17th
respectively. Wentworth who ran
the 5 mile course in 24:40 and
George who ran the course in
24:44 both received All-American
status by finishing in the top 25
runners. Chuck Fisher topped his
best time by a minute to take 32
with a time of 25:09. Greg Boyd
was next with a time of 25:44 to
finish 63rd. Last year’s All
American Tim Black had a time
of 25:56 to finish 76th. A time of
26:12 was posted by Todd Murphy
to finish 88th. John Traynor
rounded out the Brevard team
with a time of 27:04 to finish 130th
out of 500 runners from 22 dif
ferent junior colleges from
around the nation.
The Tornado Harriers finished
with 156 total points, just one
point away from third place
which was clinched by New
Mexico, South Michigan finished
first in the meet with 59 points
followed by Hagerstown,
Maryland Junior College with 71.
It was the best finish ever for
Brevard, who won the Region X
Championship for the ninth
straight year under Region X
Coach of the Year, Norman
Witek.
Jeff Wentworth commented on
how it feels to be an All-American
in cross country, “It was a great
honor which was mainly a team
effort” and when asked why he
thought the Tornadoes finished so
high in the National meet he said,
“the whole team ran a great
race, and everyone wanted to win
for each other, in other words it
was fantastic overall team ef
fort.”
John George commented, “We
had a close-knit team and Coach
Witek had everyone prepared
and everything just fell into
place.” When asked about the
honor of being an All-American
he said, “it was an ac
complishment that was one of my
goals and I was helped out a lot
by Tim Black; also it is an in
dividual effort that couldn’t have
happened without my team
mates.
Chuck Fisher, who finished
32nd, was asked how it felt to
finish so high in a national meet,
and rephed, “It was the National
meet and I was psyched up to do
well and everything just came
out perfect. We peaked at the
right time and we were fortunate
enough not to have any serious
injuries at this time.”
Coach Norman Witek, com
menting on the meet which
gained national prominence for
the always powerful Tornadoes,
said, “It was a tough meet, and I
am very proud of the way our
guys came through in this-
pressure situation. This indicates
that there must be something to
the National rankings. At the
beginning of the meet we were
rankedl fourth nationally, and
that’s where we finished in the
national meet.”
So ends another in the long line
of successful seasons in Cross
Country for Brevard. A season
which in fact was the most
successful in the illustrious
history of Cross Country for the
Tornadoes. A season in which the
team had two All-Americans and
numerous other notable in
dividual achievements, but it was
an overall team effort which paid
off in the end.
