Tuesday, February 17,1981 Off the Record The Clarion Page 7 Gonzolitis by Scott Lafoy For the past five years, Ted Nugent has been a household word among rock and roll fans. This animal-like rock and roll warrior has been loose in the rock world since he was 17 years old, and has been jamming hot and heavy for the past 17 years. With over 15 albums to his credit, Ted Nugent symbolizes the peak of intensity in rock and roll music, and demonstrates a totally objective attitude towards rock. Ted’s objective is to conquer the world, emancipating all the world’s people from the reins of blandness, and super charging them with “Gonzolitis”, the state of being a Nugent freak. Ted Nugent was born in Detroit, and participated in Detroit bands including The Royal High Boys, the Lourds, and The Amboy Dukes, the latter having released seven well- received albums. The 1975 Ted Nugent started his own band and began to receive the acclaim he’d been stalking for the past 10 years. With the first three Ted Nugent albums, entitled, “Ted Nugent”, “Free for All”, and “Cat Scratch Fever”, Ted had raised a massive army of followers, and “Gonzolitis” was spreading fast. In 1978, Nugent released the epic “Double Live Gonzo”. This live album brought the intensity of Ted’s unrelinquishing live concert to our homes. My mother cried. My neighbors writhed in pain. I had a copy of “Gonzo” and I was playing it LOUD!!! This album confirmed Ted’s immense popularity. Ted Nugent was King! Since then Nugent has released three albums, including the mighty “Wango Tango” from 1980’s “Scream Dream”. To some Ted Nugent is great; to some he is a fool; to some he is immortal. To me, Ted Nugent is an attitude, as true fans will confirm. Once an interviewer asked Ted what he liked to listen to. “Ted Nugent! I’d go to the corners of the world to hear me,” was Ted s reply. All I can say about Ted Nugent is it’s Gonzo! I have “Gonzolitis” and I’m proud of it. “Gonzolitis” is the major argument of Wallyism, and my reply is “Long Live Ted, Bosha Wally!” Sophmore Recitals Stephen Williams In Concert by Francy Brown The B.C. Music Department will present Stephen Williams in a sophomore organ recital Friday, February 27, at 8:15 p.m., and will be held at the First United Methodist Church. Stephen began his studies in organ performance and church music at age twelve. At this time he took the position of assistant organist at the First Baptist Church of Swansea, S.C. At age fifteen, he was appointed organist at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Orangeburg, S.C., and one year later became organist-choirmaster, a position which he held for three years. Before transferring to Brevard College, Stephen attended the University of South Carolina where he studied organ with Robert Van Doren and William Bates. His first year at Brevard, he studied with Adelaide Miller, and for the past year has been studying with Marilyn Keiser from Asheville. Stephen will be performing the works of Bach, Hindemith, Messiaen and Mendelssohn, in his recital. The public is invited to attend. 1 Is this your normal college student? After a year filled with activity, the occasion for recognition has arrived. The purpose of the convention is to commend those chapters of North and South Carolina who have performed exceptionally in service, publicity and spirit. The Brevard chapter subsidizes the Sally Beard Service Award in order to honor the one chapter within the region that has exhibited the most outstanding program of service projects. The awards are presented at an impressive banquet coupled with a speech delivered by a guest of distinction. In addition to the excitement of awards, the convention grants the opportunity of night skiing. For members with sufficient courage, it can provide them their first contact with skiing. The highlight of the convention should be seeing the incoming P.T.K. adviser Dr. Clara Wood on ice!
