Now Is The Time
Begin Transfer Procedures
AreYou Homesick?
by Gay Harshbarger
Whether you miss your
parents, your boyfriend or
girlfriend, or your dog Spot, don’t
feel alone. At one time or another
during a college career, almost
everyone experiences that dread
ed feeling known as homsickness.
You know it. That empty feel
ing in the pit of your stomach,
that lump in your throat like
when you swallow gum. It may
take shape in many different
ways though, so beware.
When your roommate who is on
the track team has just found out
that he won’t be able to go home
until Christmas, don’t be surpris
ed when you ask him how prac
tice went and he kicks you in the
shin. Just say to yourself, “He
must be homesicL” Or what
about when you walk in your
room and find that your room
mate from Florida has just taken
scissors and made shorts out of
your new pair of Calvin Klein
jeans and has gone outside to lie
in the sun. Rather than taking
those scissors and chasing after
her, simply attribute her insanity
to homesickness.
Aside from going home, there
is basically not much that can be
done to get over this plague. But
you must always remember that
homesickness is a touchy subject
to those who are experiencing it.
It is not advisable to say to a
friend in the cafeteria, “This sure
isn’t like the food I used to eat at
home.” You will probably end up
with a face full of mashed
potatoes (or is that mushed
potatoes?).
So the next time you see that
distinctive long face with those
sad puppy-eyes, have pity. But be
careful in your attempts to con
sole, or be prepared to face the
consequences.
If you are a student planning to
transfer to another college next
fall, now is the time to get
started. As a college transfer stu
dent and according to the Na
tional Association of College Ad
missions Counselors (NACAC),
you have some important respon
sibilities. One is notify all col
leges and universities, which
have granted you acceptance,
whether or not you are going to
attend. This notification date
should be as soon as possible, or
by May 1 at the latest.
Furthermore, two of the rights
you have are very important to
be aware of, such as: the right to
by Elliott Dugger
have written information from
any college you apply to concern
ing the policies of requirments
and documents you have to have
to be admitted; application fees,
refunds and housing; ability of
your courses to transfer, credit
hours, and quality points, and the
transferability of courses of
grades less than C. Secondly, you
have the right, at least one month
prior to enrollment of any college
lege, to be notified which courses
you took will be accepted, the
ones that will apply to your
degree, and the right to know
your accumulative grade point
average, quality points, and how
many quarters or semesters it
will take to get your degree.
Robert G. McLendon, Dean of
Admissions at Brevard College,
submitted these responsibilities
and rights along with a few others
to the NACAC. They were ap
proved and will be of help to the
transfer student. Dean McLen
don is the chairman of the
Southern Association of College
Admissions Counselors and can
answer any questions about these
policies. Also, he can help correct
any problem you may have con
cerning these rights and respon
sibilities during the admissions
process.
Vickers and Truesdale
New English Teachers
by Linda Jones
Dr. Mozelle Vickers, a publish
ed poet, is one of the new addi
tions to the English Department
at Brevard College. With her doc
torate from the University of
Texas, she has taught creative
writing, poetry and composition
She “loves teaching students”
Dr. Vicker’s interest in Brevard
stemmed from the location of the
school, its reputation and its
church association. Now that she
has earned her doctorate, Dr.
Vicker’s remaining goals include
helping students learn, develop
ing total staff quality, publishing
books and poetry and “being the
best professional teacher I can
be.” Dr. Vickers teaches Enghsh
lOlA, lOlB, 102 and ESC 201.
Dr. Vance Truesdale, another
English Department additon
fimshed graduate school at the
University of South Carolina. He
has a background in linguistics,
but also teaches compositon. He
simply says, “I think of myself as
a coach or trainer. I basically
train students to write up to the
standards of college.” Dr.
Truesdale says he is impressed
with the students here and that
they seem to have a little more
ambition and motivation. He is a
Navy veteran and has studied
Spanish, French, and Chinese.
Newspaper work, editing, repor
ting and photography, and inter
preting are among his other job
experience. Dr. Tniesdale says,
“A student should approach col
lege with the attitude of learning
all he can.” He enjoys outdoor ac
tivities and resides in Brevard
with his wife and two children.
