Number 5
Mrs. Buck
Good-Bye to a Friend
by Lorie Hoffmann
For those of you who have not
heard, Betty Buck, the school’s
College Counselor and Assistant
Professor of Psychology, is leav
ing at the end of this semester. A
few weeks ago her husband
retired as City Manager and took
a new job in Holden Beach, N.C.
Mrs. Buck has been at Brevard
for five years and has “enjoyed
this job more than any other, and
it is going to be very hard to
leave.” She feels that every col
lege has its personality, and
Brevard is no exception. Mrs.
Buck feels that Brevard’s at
mosphere is one of warmth, car
ing, and compassion, and these
qualities extend to the classroom.
Mrs. Buck says that she will miss
the faculty, but she will especial
ly miss the students. The feeling
is definitely mutual. Pete Mer-
cier says, “I only wish that there
were more teachers that care as
much about students as Betty
Buck.” Others describe her as
considerate, fair, compassionate.
and , most importantly, confiden
tial. Mrs. Buck feels that her life
centers on Christ, and therefore,
since Brevard is a church-
related college, she is aware of
Christian concern. Her students
are aware of her concern and
compassion for them. Elliott
Dugger says that the school will
lose a great counselor,” but
Harold Walker sums it up best
when he says, “not only will we
lose a good teacher, but a good m
friend.”

Kohring to be Featured Artist
Tracy Kohring at work
Tracy Kohring, sophomore,
will be a featured student artist
at the Mountain Christmas Show
to be held in late November. The
Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. of
Asheville is sponsoring the
special exhibit and is now includ
ed in the growing list of corpora
tions supporting the arts, such as,
R.J. Reynolds, Akzona, Phillip
Morris, McDonalds and many
others.
Pepsi Cola has commissioned
four art students, one each from
UNCA, Warren Wilson College,
Brevard College and Montreat-
Anderson College to provide four
individual canvases in the Pepsi
Cola booth while the Mountain
Christmas Show at the Civic
Center is in progress. The public
will have an opportunity to watch
this project and determine the
difficulty in the creation of a
piece of art. The young artists,
Kerry Younts from Asheboro, NC
with Montreat-Anderson College,
Santiago Vaca from Equador
with Warren Wilson College,
Tracy Kohring from England
with Brevard College, and a stu
dent yet to be chosen with UNCA,
will be working with acrylics on
4x5 canvas utilizing their own in
dividual styles and techniques.
They have been encouraged to
use their creativity in the design
and implementation of their
work. After completion, the can
vases will be on loan to various
businesses and institutions in the
area. Ultimately, Pepsi Cola in
tends to donate each piece to the
school which the student attends.
President Reagan’s federal
budget cutback in the Arts and
Humanities appears to be
stimulating corporate interest in
the support of the arts.
Businesses are beginning to see
the value in encouraging and
assisting talented artists in their
chosen media, whether it be two
or three dimensional art, crafts,
music or dance. If the arts are to
survive and flourish, it will be
necessary for more businesses to
become increasingly financially
active.
The Mountain Christmas Show
begins Friday, November 20th at
3 p.m. and continues through Sun
day, November 22nd at the
Asheville Civic Center. The
public is encouraged to view the
Pepsi Cola booth several times in
order to see the progress of the
local artists, and to ask any
questions of the arlists or the
Pepsi Cola representatives.
