Page 6 Swim Team The Clarion Tuesday, December 8.19si Preparation for New Season by Gay Harshbarger The Brevard Swim Team is off to a good start this year, with 26 people expressing an interest in membership. Coach Belton Hammond says that with enough participation the team should do well, although he does anticipate tough competi tion, especially for the girl’s team. As a fund raiser, the team par ticipated in a swimathon held here at Brevard on November 15. The swimathon also acted as a warm-up for the team’s first meet, at Milligan College on November 20. In the overall scores Milligan topped Brevard; yet Brevard did receive a number of first places in individual races. Top winners for the girls team (whose final score was: Brevard 35-Milligan 70) were: -Cathy Clay, who placed first in both the 400 meter freestyle and 100 individual medley, and 2nd place in the 100 and 50 meter butterfly, -Susan Henderson who placed first in the 50 meter freestyle, -Abby Hoag who placed 3rd in both the 50 and 100 meter backstroke, -Mary Lineburger who finish ed 2nd in the 50 and 100 meter breaststroke. Mr. Hammond says the girls’ team showed improvement, and was best in the distance events. The men’s team (whose score was Brevard 60, Milligan 50) received top scores in the medley relay. The members of this relay team were: John Schumacher, Kevin McGowin, Hunter Short, and Steve Smith. -Ken Henley won the 400 and 200 meter freestyle and the 50 meter backstroke. -Steve Smith placed- first in both the 100 individual medley and the 50 meter backstroke, -Hunter Short placed first in the 100 and 50 meter freestyle, -Kevin McGowin placed 3rd in the 100 meter breaststroke, the 50 meter free-style and the 100 individual medley, -John Schumacher placed first ■in both the 100 meter breast stroke and the 100 meter backstroke and 3rd in the 50 meter breast-stroke, -And also competing in distance and sprinting events were John Irwin and Monte Orchard, who did well in both. The Club plans to continue its activities next semester with a meet at the end of January. Anyone still interested in the swim team should contact Mr. Hammond. Harriers Place Third by Randy Ward On October 31st Brevard traveled to Greenville, S.C. to compete in a 25 mile road relay. Each man runs 5 miles and then hands off'to a 2nd runner who runs 5 miles until each of the 5 men on the team runs 5 miles, for a total of 25 miles. During the introduction Brevard College was completely ignored, mainly because of the many famous runners entered in the race. Some of those who entered were three former olym pians and an all Irish team, representing former fast Ten nessee State runners. To no one’s surprise, the all Irish team won with a time of 2:00.15, followed by Running South in 2:04.33. Only after Brevard’s Gerald Hutchinson ran a fine lead off leg of 25:01 to hand off in 3rd position, did any one realize that Brevard was entered. Brevard finished in 3rd position with a tinie of 2:06.48, out distanc ing two well established clubs in the Greenville Track Club 2:07.41 and the Atlanta Track Club 2:07.45. Brevard College entered two other, teams in the race. Team “B,” which placed 6th overall, was led by Mike Peveto and Bryon Batten who ran 26:03.
