Page 4 The Clarion Tuesday. March 29, At Indoor Nationals BC Thinclads Grasp Strong Fourth Place By Jeff Shore Success is having all of the school’s track meet participants earn All-American honors and place no worse than sixth in six events while in route to producing the team’s best indoor finish ever. Such was the result of Brevard’s finish at the year’s na tional championship. At the end of the two-day meet Brevard had tied for fourth place overall in the team standings and had collected 11 All-American certificates. The distance medley entry, which had barely met the meet qualifying standard, was a sur prise as Sam Obwocha’s mile leg (4:09.19) brought the Tornados home national champions in 10:01.84. Equally strong legs were turn ed in by Julius Korir (% - -1:56.23), and Andy Latimer (¥4 - 51.50). Obwocha, who accounted for three All-American certificates, was Brevard’s top individual per former as he won the mile in 4:12.77 and placed third in the 880 run with a time of 1:52.9. In the 2-mile run Jim Hickey entered as one of thefavoritesand lived up to his billing as he was narrowly defeated at the tape. Close behind Hickey’s 9:06.1 se cond place effort was Eric Day whose 9:11.89 earned him fifth place. Marty Humphrey, Brevard’s only representative in the 3-mile run, was able to hold off the field in the last 300 meters to capture the last All-American spot in 14:32.3. Korir, competing in his first in door season, completed a suc cessful double by taking third place (4:15.9) in the mile run. What had been expected to be the strongest event for the Tor nados fwintwise, the triple and long jumps, ended up accounting for only one point. Andy Latimer and Willie Holeman were unable to compete at full strength due to injuries sustained earlier in the season. However, Holeman’s 46’H” tri ple jump was good enough for sixth place. Latimer, who had been bothered by a sore ankle for several weeks prior to the meet, was able to jump but did not place with his 46’5” mark. The outdoor season began last Saturday with two teams being sent to the Florida Relays and Clemson All-Comers meet. Tornados Improve Season Results; Rogers Deems Season A Success By Todd Greeson Brevard Men’s Basketball Coach Doug Rogers said at the beginning of the year he was ex pecting improvements over last year’s losing season. He saw his expectations met as the Tornados posted a 19-10 record this season. Rogers points out highlights of the early season as being the seven-game winning streak to begin the season as well as tour nament championships in both the Ross-Burnes and Smokey Mountain Invitationals. In both tournaments freshman Jeff Jones was selected the most valuable player. In addition, Larry “Doc” Gaines was named to the All-Tournament team in Ross-Burnes as was Tim Phillips in the Smokey Mountain Invita tional. Coach Rogers believes that his teams’ peak performance of the season came when they beat na tionally ranked power-house Anderson 78-67 on the road later in the season. The Tornados, however, drop ped three of their next four con tests, all conference games, and finished fourth in the conference with a 3-7 mark. In the conference tournament a few weeks ago, Brevard defeated North Greenville 83-78, yet lost a close battle with Anderson 88-87 in the quarter-finals. Ricky Traylor received his se cond honor of the season by being named to the conference All- Tournament team. The season seemed nearly over for Brevard at that point, but the Tornados received an unexpected bid to the Region X Tournament. The Tornados, however, lost a see-saw battle with nationally ranked Chowan 87-82 in what was Brevard’s first appearance in the Region X Tournament in four years. Jeff Jones grabbed the highest points per game average for the Tornados this season, 21.1. He was also named to the All- Conference first team and All- Region second team. Overall, the season was deem ed a success by Coach Rogers. The team defeated three na tionally ranked teams this year- Hiwassee, Gainesville, and Anderson-and were never severely beaten in any contest (eight of the team’s losses were by a margin of five or less). . s " '■ V All-American Tornado Sam Obwocha (above) was a key member of this year’s running squad which earned Brevard College national ranking in both indoor and out door tracking events. Obwocha, who has run the mile in just over 4:09, has earned three All-American cer tificates. Ladies Finish Season With Three-Win Streak by Greg Smart With 3 wins in a row, the BC Women’s Basketball team played some of its best games right at the end of the season. In the last home game, against Furman, BC was down 35-30 at the half, and with 8 minutes left, was down by ten. Then Coach Mary Ann Sunbury called for a half-court press and Brevard tied the game at 68 and sent it into overtime. Donna Bishop had 19 second half points and sank the final basket in overtime to give Brevard the 70-68 victory. In the last regular season game, at Montreat-Anderson, the team played total control. Four players scored in double figures as BC easily won 81-59. Bishop led the scoring with 12 pt., followed by Phyllis Walker with 11, and Cheryl Vickers and Crystal Stevenson, both with 10. Coach Sunbury commented that there were some die-hard Brevard fans, who attended games regularly. Yet, these were always the same fans game after game. Coach Sunbury added that with more support from the stu dent body and faculty, the team would have been motivated to play better. At the end of the regular season, they travelled to Ander son College to play in the Western Divisional Tournament. They won the first round with a decisive 82-69 win over Lees- McRae, in which Bishop had her season high 30 points. In the second round, they played Anderson, who is ranked 10th in the nation., Anderson’s team includes 5 girls over 6 feet tall, one of which is a 6’1’ freshman All-American. The Lady Tornados finished the year with an 89-56 loss. Donna Bishop had 17 points follwed by Lisa Rudeseal with 11. Bishop finished the season as leading scorer, averaging 15-3 pts. per game, followed by Lisa Rudeseal with 9.1 points per game. Dawn McBride led the free throw standing with a 74% average. Coach Sunbury had many favorable comments on the team and the season. The team suf fered through many injuries, but “we played hard and were com petitive with everyone we played,” she said. Coach Sunbury hopes to get some good recruits and, with 7 sophomores graduating, looks forward to a good season next year.
