Monday, March 26, 1984 Number 8 Roys Retire After Years Of Dedicated Service fthofo />v Jill in-lf Dr. and Mrs. Ed Roy Music Extravaganza A Big Success By Jill Avett After distinguished careers in service to Brevard College, Dr. and Mrs. Ed Roy have announced their retirement. Dr. Roy has been a faculty member for the past 40 years while Mrs. Roy has worked at the college for the past 32 years. The Roys met at a youth assembly at Lake Junaluska and were married in 1947. At the time of their marriage, Dr. Roy was already employed at BC. In 1952, Mrs. Roy became the Registrar of Deeds and served in that office for 30 years. The Roys have also worked outside of the college, each being actively involved in various civic organizations. Both enjoy traveling, and dur ing the past years they have traveled extensively in the Mid dle East and the Mediterranean islands. In 1970, the Roys took a semester sabbatical and along with their daughter, Becki, traveled in Egypt, Israel, and Cyprus. The also visited Greece and Turkey, tracing St. Paul’s journeys. Dr. and Mrs. Roy have been on five Mediterranean cruises, during which Dr. Roy served as the ship’s protestant chaplain during Christmas. The Roys are particularly proud of their family. Their daughter Becki and son-in-law Roger Benfield have two children, Jason, 8, and Shane, 6. Mrs. Roy considers the grand children “the light of our Uves.” When asked about retirement plans. Dr. Roy said, “I plan to do something different the next 40 years of my life.” Mrs. Roy said, “I hope to do it with him.” President Martinson said “The Roys.have honored all of us by seeing fit to serve here for these many years, and the College can not thank them enough.” In the letter announcing his retirement. Dr. Roy wrote, “I came to this college right out of seminary in 1944, and this has been my only appointment. Five Track Teain Meinbers Named All-American % Tina Banks By Jill Avett Placing 8th in national stan dings, Brevard’s Men’s track team had four members to become All-Americans; Alphonse Swai, Marty Hum phrey, Glenn Roach, and Kelvin McRae. In addition, Tina Banks Marty Humphrey became the first woman All- American from Brevard. All- American is the title given to the top six finishers in an indoor na tional event. The NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) In door National Meet was held March 2-3 in Fayetteville, Arkan- Kelvin McRae sas. Alphonse Swai finished 2nd in the 2-mile run with a time of 8:47.58 min. Swai also placed 2nd in the 1-mile run with a time of 4:09.23 min. Marty Humphrey placed 4th in the 3-mile run with a personal best of 14:04.75 min. Glenn Roach was 6th in the 1-mile run with a personal best of 4:15.71 Glenn Roach min. Kelvin McRae placed 6th in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.46 sec. Tina Banks was 4th in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.55 sec. Patrick O’Grady, Jeff Jenrette, and Tomasina Queen also attended nationals entering the 3-mile run, highjump, and tri ple jump respectively. Alphonse Swai Coach Norm Witek said that the “kids who went ran great,” and “on the whole, I think the team did extremely well.” He also said that he wished more had qualified and hopefully there would be many to qualify for the outdoor nationals to be held in May.
