A Big Success
By Jill Avett
After distinguished careers in
service to Brevard College, Dr.
and Mrs. Ed Roy have announced
their retirement. Dr. Roy has
been a faculty member for the
past 40 years while Mrs. Roy has
worked at the college for the past
32 years.
The Roys met at a youth
assembly at Lake Junaluska and
were married in 1947. At the time
of their marriage, Dr. Roy was
already employed at BC. In 1952,
Mrs. Roy became the Registrar
of Deeds and served in that office
for 30 years. The Roys have also
worked outside of the college,
each being actively involved in
various civic organizations.
Both enjoy traveling, and dur
ing the past years they have
traveled extensively in the Mid
dle East and the Mediterranean
islands. In 1970, the Roys took a
semester sabbatical and along
with their daughter, Becki,
traveled in Egypt, Israel, and
Cyprus. The also visited Greece
and Turkey, tracing St. Paul’s
journeys. Dr. and Mrs. Roy have
been on five Mediterranean
cruises, during which Dr. Roy
served as the ship’s protestant
chaplain during Christmas.
The Roys are particularly
proud of their family. Their
daughter Becki and son-in-law
Roger Benfield have two
children, Jason, 8, and Shane, 6.
Mrs. Roy considers the grand
children “the light of our Uves.”
When asked about retirement
plans. Dr. Roy said, “I plan to do
something different the next 40
years of my life.” Mrs. Roy said,
“I hope to do it with him.”
President Martinson said “The
Roys.have honored all of us by
seeing fit to serve here for these
many years, and the College can
not thank them enough.” In the
letter announcing his retirement.
Dr. Roy wrote, “I came to this
college right out of seminary in
1944, and this has been my only
appointment. It was here I mar
ried, reared a family, taught, liv
ed, and served...May God con
tinue to bless you and the institu
tion we love so much.”
