Cladon Volume 52 Brevard College, Brevard, N.C. Tuesday, September 18, 1984 Number 2 BC Enters Year-Long Self-Study Period Brevard College will begin its institutional self-study this year and has named Mr. Randolph Jackson to be the director and general editor of the self-study. According to Jackson, a college is required by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to make a self- study every ten years in order to maintain its accreditation. “The process, which takes two years, is designed so that a college may examine its procedures and policies in all its various areas- from the Board of Trustees to the students, from the physical operations to the Admissions of fice,” Jackson says. He also adds that the self-study is considered successful only if the whole col lege community is involved. A representative from SACS, Dr. Jean Walker, was on campus in March for the official “kick off” of the self-study. Soon after, the self-study steering commit tee, composed of various faculty members, convened with the col lege committee chairmen to discuss the college’s purpose as it -is stated in the college handbook. According to Jackson, “The col lege purpose, clearly stated, is vital for a good self-study. “The steering committee will work this summer to prepar our in-house manual so that the col lege community will know what kinds of information we will need to collect in order to compile the final self-study document,” Jackson said. In two years, a visiting com mittee, appointed by SACS, will spend a week on campus review ing Brevard’s self-study. Interest Groups Meeting On BC Campus By Stephen Wells Within the next few weeks the newly established Interest Groups will be holding their preliminary meetings at the home of Dean Wray. The groups, set up by the Dean for the purpose of getting people involved in campus activities, will be convening on different scheduled evenings with the last group meeting being Sept. 26. At each of the meetings, plans for the group will be discussed as will a schedule for future sessions. “So often it is easy for people to miss out on events and programs,” said Dean Wray, “and unfortunately they end up doing very little.” This is the first year the groups have been introduced at Brevard, but the Dean had previously in itiated such groups at schools like Vanderbilt University and William and Mary College. Dean Wray also said that the program was a success at the other schools. cont. on page 3
