Roadrunners Fourth At NCSU, First At UNCC
On October 11, the BC Roadrun
ners finished behind three ACC
teams in the North Carolina State
Intercollegiate Championships in
Carter Findley Stadium. NC
State’s team, which includes
three former Brevard College
runners easily won the meet with
31 points. NCSU was followed by
Wake Forest University with 57
points, Duke University with 100
points, and Brevard College with
102 points.
Brevard’s best showing came
from Patrick O’Grady who finish
ed 11th with a time of 25:31 over
the rough 5,000 meter course.
Glenn Roach finished 16th and
Charlie Purser finished 17th with
times of 25:46 and 25:49, respec
tively. According to Brevard
Cross-Country Coach Norm
Witek, “All three men have run
well all season and are good can
didates to earn All-American
honors.”
Rodney Curry and Henning
Brandt are still recovering from
ankle injuries, which, according
to Witek, are taking a toll on
Brevard’s finishing strength.
Curry finished 28th and Brandt
finished 30th, 50 seconds behind
front runner O’Grady.
Other BC entries included
freshmen David Coulter, who
placed 31st; Randy Ashley, who
placed 32nd; and Winston Brown,
who placed 33rd. David Mays
finished 46th and Charles Hinkle,
who finished 54th, rounded out
the Brevard squad.
On October 20, the team com
peted in the University of North
Carolina at Charlotte Invita
tional. Brevard easily outdistanc
ed her competitors to win the
meet with a total of 22 points.
Rounding out the top five were
Georgia State with 80 points,
Western Carolina University with
126 points, Virginia Com
monwealth with 134 points, and
Pembroke Slate with 139 points.
Brevard exhibited fine team
performance as only 23 seconds
separated the top five Brevard
runners and less than a minute
elapsed among the finishing
times of BC’s top nine. Phil
Roberts of Western Carolina won
the 5 mile race in 25:07. He was
challenged until the last seconds
of the race by Brevard’s Patrick
O’Grady who finished second
with a time of 25:22. Brevard’s
Rodney Curry finished fourth and
was followed by teammate
Charlie Purser, 5th, Henning
Brandt, 6th, and Glenn Roach
7th.
Brevard received additional
strength from the grouping of
David Coulter, who finished llth;
Randy Ashley, who finished 12th;
David Mays, who finished I3th|
and Winston Brown, who finished
14th. Brevard’s second grouping
logged times within 19 seconds o(
each other.

Brevard’s girl's basketball
team is anticipating a successful
season, with seven strong return
ing sophomores and six very pro
mising freshmen making up this
year’s team. Coach Mary Ann
Sunbury sounded very en
thusiastic about the team’s pro
gress on the court after their first
on-court scrimmage practice.
“The team is strong,’’said Sun
bury. “All the girls know what
they’re doing which is a good sign
so early in the season.” The ac
tual season doesn’t begin until
November 17 when Brevard hosts
Warren-Wilson.
On November 3, the girls will
play a blue/white game display
ing their teamwork for parent’s
weekend. There will be two tour
nament games before Christmas
against Wofford and Warren-
Wilson and at the end of
February, Brevard will host the
Conference Championships.
“Regionals are in the first week
of March, and I expect that the
girls will play well enough to
make them,” speculates Sun
bury.
Sophomore players to be wat
ching for are: Sheila Gibson
(guard) who was voted All-region
last year, Angie Vickers (post),
voted to All-division last year,
I vet Concepcion (post) Julie
Hartley (post), Robin Williams
(wing), Pam Lyons (wing), and
Carmen Nelon (post). Freshmen
players are: Susan Seymore
(point guard), Sylvia
Alberey(point guard), Lynn Mac-
fartane (wing), Joy Ford (wing),
Masayo Suzuki (wing), and
Teresa Clark (post).
Soccer Team Continues To Outshoot Opponents

The Brevard College Soccer
Team had a productive week in
Region X competition, posting a
four game winning streak.
The ball started rolling on Sept
25th when the Tornados defeated
Mon treat-Anderson College 5-0
before an excited Brevard crowd.
The Tornados led at the end of
the first period 3-0 with goals
scored by Alfredo Moya, Mike
Nissley, and Eddie Tadlock.
Brevard maintained control of
the second period and two more
goals were added by John
Folckemer and Leo Coleman
respectively as the Tornados
went ahead to win 5-0.

On September 27th the Tor
nados defeated Anderson College
4-3 in a close contest that tested
the intensity of both teams.
Brevard got off to a fine start
outshooting Anderson 17-4 but
still managed to trail 2-1 at the
half with Alfredo Moya scoring
on a penalty kick for the Tor
nados. In the second period the
Tornados were outshot 24-5 but
managed to score three goals to
Anderson’s single goal putting
Brevard- ahead 4-3. John

On Saturday the 29th the Tor
nados traveled to Tigerville S.C.
to play North Greenville College.

eager Oxford College squad.
Brevard got off to a slow start
trailing 2-0 at the end of the first
period despite a stronger offen
sive showing.
The second period proved to
more productive for the Tornados
as they scored 5 goals to give
Brevard a 5-2 victory over Ox
ford. Scott Pasarella, Paul
Bivens, and Alfredo Moya each
scored for the Tornados while
Leo Coleman added two goals.
The Tornados have found a
winning combination as they
have moved into second place in
Region X competition. With the
regular season coming to a close
holding that position will remain
a challenge to Brevard,
