Bumgarner Performs Today

Noted guitarist Stan
Bumgarner will perform in
Dunham Auditorium on
November 14, as part of the
Brevard College Cultural Life
program.
Bumgarner's program will
consist of solo pieces on the
classical guitar and Renaissance
lute along with a slide program to
complement selected pieces.
Bumgarner is a native of North
Carolina who began playing the
guitar at age twelve. At seven
teen, he helped form a rock and
roll band which gained regional
fame, giving him the opportunity
to focus on composing and ar
ranging.
He received a degree in Music
Education from Lenoir-Rhyne
College in 1966 and studied
classical guitar with Jesus Silva,
protege of Andre Segovia and
guitar instructor at the North
Carolina School of the Arts. For
four years he participated in the
North Carolina Arts Council's
Stan Bumgarner will perform this morning as part of
the continuing Cultural Life program.
Visiting Artist Program. He was
also the only solo artist chosen to
participate in the Affiliate Artists
Incorporated's 1981-82 North
Carolina Touring Program.
Stan Bumgarner is also the pro
ducer of an educational sound
filmstrip called “An Introduction
to the Guitar and Lute. "
The performance is scheduled
for 10:15 a.m. in Dunham
Auditorium. Admission is free.

Competition

Harvey Miller, professor of
music at BC, won second prize for
his choral piece “Sing We Noel "
in an international competition
sponsored by the Pro Cont-o
Singers of London, England.
Celebrating the group's 30th
anniversary and honoring its
founder Eric Green, the^omget^
ion was for a choral work of mix
ed voices and instrumental ac
companiment with a Christmas
theme. Mr. Miller's choral piece
will premier in London,
December 19, at the Christmas
concert given by the Pro Conto
Singers.
Mr. Miller, who has been
teaching at Brevard College for
20 years, directs vocal ensembles
as well as teaches voice, piano,
music history, composition, and
electronic studio. He studied
voice at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill and
studied compostion at Indiana
University. He holds a BA, BM,
and MA from Chapel Hill. In ad
dition, he holds a MM from In
diana University where he has
also done doctoral work. He has
loured the eastern United States
and England with his choral
groups from the college. One
group was featured on the radi(
show, “The Protestant Hour'
another was chosen to sing for the
Methodist World Conference.

The 1985 edition of Who’s Who
Among Students in American
Junior Colleges will carry the
names of eighteen Brevard Col
lege sophomores. These students
have been selected as being
among the country’s most
outstanding campus leaders.
