Page Four iLady Tornados Improve With Each Game The Clarion Tuesday, October 8, 1985 I by Ramona Carpio With the new season just undei way, the 1985-86 women’s soccer team is showing their predicted successful season by gradual im provement od their games. Despite the letdown of losing to Erskine College 5-0 in the first game, they played with great stamina and improved the next week losing to Erskine College by only three points. In the game against Warren Wilson, however. the lady Tornados had their first taste of victory by defeating them by two points. Coach Julie Johnson believes that their biggest problem is scoring. “We have the potential to get to the goal, but we need to work harder in keeping the ball and scoring”she said. The top players of the team are Allison Wright, Lynn Simril, and Annie Fisher. The top scorer of the team is Missy Meyers. Coach Johnson is very impressed by Sonya Sharp, the most improved player and Mika Tomada, the mostvaluablebeginner. Mika has never played soccer before and has become a very tough stopper, Coach Johnson would like to take this time to thank all the en thusiastic watchers that have come to the games and hopes that the support of the women’s soc cer team will continue. Women'TCross (Country ‘The Right Stuff’ finalists with times ranging from I j by David Mays This year Brevard boasts its first full squad of women cross I country runners. Although only I the second year of a women’s I competitive running program, Coach David Rinker has manag ed to land eight well-trained I ladies. The runners are Heather I Chamberlain from Leesburg VA; Icathy Haynie from St. I Petersburg, FL; Terrie Jackson I and Lizanne Lance both from iRiverdale, GA; Karen Mulligan I from Marietta, GA; Arlene IMusick from Bristol VA; Kim I Nelson from Coral Springs, FA; land Stephanie Perry from [Marion, VA. Thus far the team has com- Ipeted in two meets - one at Berry ■College placing first and at the iMalone College Invitational plac- ling tenth. Invitational at Ber^ BC Booters Defeat N.Greenville 8-0 I by Frank Perez The 1985-86 men’s soccer squad I debuted against Anderson Col- 1 lege, losing 2-1. The game was fast-paced, intense and exciting for the fans. “Brevard played 1 well with winning balls in the air although more passing was need- led.” according to Assistant I Coach David Taylor. Anderson’s first goal came from a breakaway; a second goal occurred when their midfielder overlapped into the box, scoring off of a rebound. Yong Song, the central midfielder, scored the lone goal for Brevard. On Setember 16th, Brevard hosted North Greenville College, winning 8-0. Alfredo Moya had four goals and broke the school record of 29 career goals set by Danny Kristmann in 1983. The old record was broken by a penal ty kick, the new record is now 30. Others who scored were Larry DeLong with one goal, and Yong Song with two. Andrae Sanders I scored on a penalty kick. “Even| though the team won by a large margin, they didn’t play as well as they did against Anderson," stated Coach Taylor. ‘i*’ ■■ r I 18:28 to 20:55 were Kim Nelson, Terrie Jackson, Heather Chamberlain, Arlene Musick, Lizanne Lance, Stephanie Perry and Cathy Haynie; listed in order that they placed. At the Malone. Invitational in Canton Ohio with times ranging from 19:51 to 22:00 also listed in placing order were Nelson, Jackson, Musick, Chamberlain, Lance, Haynie and Perry. Considering the fact that this is the first womens team BC has ever fielded it is obvious that the team is off to an encouraging Cross Country Off To Impressive Start| j by Bonnie Davis Brevard’s men’s cross country team recently participated in the Berry College Invitational meet on Saturday, September 21. Brevard defeated runner up Berry College by a score of 20 to 55. Four of the top finishers in the five mile meet were Brevard run ners with times ranging from 25:02 to 25:29. They were John Christenson, Henning Brandt, David Coulter, and Paul Carpenter, listed in the order they placed. Other Brevard run ners who participated were Winsten Brown, Dean Duncan, Brian Westrater, Tom Johnson, and John Walthall. At the Malone Invitational in Canton, Ohio, the team placed first out of the 24 colleges pre sent, BC was the only two year college. Three of the top ten finalists were Christenson, Brandt, and Brown listed in order. Other participants were Carpenter, Coulter, Westrater, and Duncan. In addition to individual morn ing runs usually three to five miles long, the team has a daily work-out of about ten miles. The season will run until November 9, when the NJAA Men’s Cross Country Championship takes place in Palentine, Illinois.
