Page 6 The Clarion August 24, 1986 Orientation Week kicks off school year New and returning Brevard College students will learn quickly why the Tor nado is an apt school emblem during Orientation Week when a veritable whirl wind of activities have been planned. Highlights of the student orientation are as follows (see Orientation Brochure for details); Mandatory sessions for new and returning students will be held early in the week. All new students will assemble Mon day, Aug. 25 at 9 p.m. in Dunham Auditorium; and returning students will jissemble Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 10:30 a.m. in Dunham. New students will arrive on Sunday, Aug. 24, and check into dorms from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. A special reception will be held for parents at 1 p.m. Sunday in Dunham Auditorium during which time College leaders will address the parents. The first general session will be held Sunday night at 7 p.m. in Dunham with remarks by student and administration leaders. A Banana Split Party will follow at A.G. Myers Dining Hhll at 8 p.m. and further entertainment continues with the showing of the movie, “Indiana Jones and the Tem ple of Doom,” scheduled for 9:30 p.m. at the Student Union. (See brochure for other times). . Other features of this special week m- clude an Orientation Dance on Monday night at 9 p.m. in Boshamer Gym (wear tennis shoes, please); and Coffee House entertainment in the storm cellar both Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights by musicians Brian Huskey and Jim McGill. Registration for preregistered students is 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26 at McLarty- Goodson; and registration for new and other students follows on Wednesday, Aug. 27 from 8 a.m. till noon at the Computer Center. Classes start on Thursday, Aug. 28. The movie, “The Breakfast Club,” wii be shown Friday at 9 p.m. at the Student Union; Saturday at 10:30 p.m. in the storm cellar; and Sunday night at 9 p.m. also in the storm cellar. The Brevard College community will celebrate the annual Derby Day, Satur day, Aug. 30, which will feature a bluegrass concert on The Green at ll:30 a.m. by the Stoney Creek Boys, a picnic at noon, the tossing of the Derby at 1 p.m. and the Battle of the Dorms with competition between students, faculty and staff. Threshold will perform at a dance thal night in Boshamer Gym. Dr. Fitzgerald to address Convocation Sept. 10 The annual Fall Convocation on Wednes day, Sept. 10, at 10:15 a.m. in Dunham Auditorium will mark the beginning of the new school year, as well as kick off the 1966-’87 Life and Culture Series at Brevard College. Dr. Bernard R. Fitzgerald of Charlotte will be the featured speaker for the con vocation. Dr Fitzgerald, the senior minister at the Myers Park United Methodist Church of Charlotte, has been a Brevard College trustee since 1969, and is also on the executive committee of that board. Dr. Fitzgerald attended Wofford College and Duke University, with special addi tional studies also at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He also has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from High Point College. A member of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Chuch, Dr. Fitzgerald is a past district superintendent of the Asheville district. The Life and Culture Series for the new school year contains a variety of other pro grams. Series Chairman Ken Chamlee said, “1 think we’ve got a good schedule. I'm very excited about it.” The next event in September is the ap pearance of internationally-acclaimed classical guitarist David Richter on Thurs- The Tower Brass Quintet coming to Brevard College as part of the Life and Culture Series on Feb. 17. Convocation speaker Dr, Bernard Fitzgerald day, Sept. 25 at 8:15 p.m. in Dunham Auditorium. On Thursday, Oct. 9, Brevard will be treated to a slide-lecture by National Geographic photographer Galen Rowell. Titled “High and Wild,” Rowell’s show features many of his high-climbing ex periences in Tibet, Nepal, China, Alaska and the mountains of Africa. The speakers are still being arranged for the Perguson Family Lecture Series, slated for Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 10:15 a.m. in Dunham. The Brevard College Drama Depart ment’s fall drama is set for the second and third weekends in November at the Bam Theater under the direction of Professor Sam Cope. On Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 8:15 in Dunham, a traveling ensemble company titled Roadside Theater presents “Brother Jack,” a blend of original and traditional Appalachian stories. The Brevard College Concert will give their fall concert on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 8:15 in Dunham under the direction of Pro fessor Steve Kelly. The College’s annual Christmas Pro gram and Tree Lighting will be Sunday and Monday, Dec. 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m. with the Fine Arts Division presenting the candlelight service of sacred and secular music, Christmas texts, and the lighting of the campus Christmas tree by President Greer. The new semester opens with Spring Convocation at Dunham on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 10:15 a.m. The Tower Brass Quintet of Ohio will present a varied program of jazz, contem porary and traditional brass music in a concert on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 8:15 at Dunham. A unique and controversial program will come to Brevard in the form of “Hitler and the Holocaust” on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 8:15 p.m. in Dunham where two survivors, at that era from opposite sides present their stories. The Collegiate Singers will give their an nual spring concert, directed by Professor Hugh Floyd on Thursday, March 19 at 8:15 p.m. in Dunham. The Staley Distinguished Scholar Lec ture Series is set for Tuesday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m.; Wednesday, March 25, at 10:15 a.m. in Dunham. On Thursday, March 26 at 8:15 p.m. in Dunham, the College Jazz Band, under the baton of Steve Kelly, kicks off a weekend jazz festival. The Brevard Chamber Orchestra will present its last of three concerts in its cur rent season at Boshamer Gymnasium Sun- ^ day, March 29 at 4 p.m. The community or chestra is directed by the College’s Pro fessor Virginia Tillotson. The Drama Department’s spring drama, directed by Sam Cope, is schedul ed for April 2-4 and 9-11 at the Barn r Theater at 8:15 p.m. The final Life and Culture Series event of the school year will be the Concert Band performance on Tuesday, April 14 at 8:15 p.m. in Dunham.
