Coach Rinker; have horses — will run
Coach Dave Rinker has big running
shoes to fill.
Rinker takes over this year from
veteran Brevard running coach Norm
. Witek whose Tornadoes have won the Na-
^ tional Junior Collegiate Athletic Associa
tion cross-country national championship
for the last four years.
“He’s got the horses,” said President
Billy Greer, “and he’s got the know-how.
We could have looked the entire country
^ over and not found a finer cross-country
coach; he’s going to run with it,” Presi
dent Greer said emphatically.
Coach Rinker looks at this year’s team
as a “good mix of experience with a lot of
good young people coming in,” adding,
“I’ve been impressed with their summer
work.”
This year’s fall schedule for the men’s
and women’s cross-country teams include
seven meets, beginning on Sept. 13 at
Wake Forest, one home meet against
UNC-Charlotte and Furman on Oct. 23,
and climaxing with the NJCAA National
Championshiop on Nov. 8 in Hagerstown,
My.
“It’s a very ambitious schedule,” said
Coach Rinker.
Sept. 13 — The Wake Forest Invitational,
Winston Salem.
Sept. 20 — The University of South
Carolina at Spartanburg Invitational,
Spartanburg.
Sept. 27 — The IVJalone College Invita
tional at Canton, Ohio.
Oct. 2 — The University of North
Carolina at Charlotte Invitational,
Charlotte.
Oct. 9 — The Furman Invitational,
Greenville, S.C.
Oct. 14 — The N.C. State Collegiate
Meet, Raleigh.
Oct. 23 — UNC-Charlotte and Furman at
Brevard College. Also, the Region XX
Championships.

Hagerstown, My.
Men’s Soccer Head Coach Don Scar
borough can’t hide his enthusiasm.
“This truly could be the best season in
Brevard College soccer history,” he said.
“I’m overly optimistic.”
Not only are his returning players last
year’s basic starting line-up which carved
out a healthy 11-5-1 record, but Coach Scar
borough calls his new recruits “far above
your average for a typical two-year
school.” And he predicts, “It’s going to be
a super year.”
Among the recruits are: David Chun, a
midfielder from Garland, Texas, where he
was named the MVP in the Texas State
High School Tournament, Division II;
Joseph Brooks, a Liberian soccer star;
Scott Hubbard, a defender from Winter
Park, Fla.; and Mike Taylor, an outstan
ding player from Erwin High School, who
last year was honored for Most Goals
Scoared and Best Offensive Player. He is
also the younger brother of BC grad and
Assistant Soccer Coach David Taylor.
Other outstanding recruits include:
Louis Rosen, one of the top defenders in
Florida; Clay Huckaby, a midfielder from
Douglasville, Ga.; Mark Higginbotham, a
midfielder from Tallahassee, Fla.; and
another Tallahassee player — Don Rett, a
goalkeeper; also Doug Robinson, a
defender from East Burke High; Steven
Smith, an Orlando, Fla., defender; and
Grant Thompson, a T.C. Roberson High
School defender.
Also, Coach Scarborough is pleased with
the return of Paul Bivens, who had to take
a year off to recover from an injiiry.
Bivens, a member of the 1983 BC team that
went all the way to runner-up position in
the NJCAA Southern District tournament,
will be called upon to pick up the scoring
punch from the Tornadoes’ all-time
leading scorer Alfredo Moya, who has
tranSfered to Erskine.
