Brevard College was turned into a winter wonderland by two late January snowfalls, making the campus a
great place for building snowmen and igloos, going sledding at all hours and having snowball fights on the way
to class at Mclarty-Goodson. See page 4-5 for more pictures. (BC News Bureau Photo)

Brevard College
receives re-
accreditation
After an exhaustive two-year process of
self-evaluation, Brevard College was re
accredited by the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools (SACS) at their
December meeting in Atlanta.
Dean of the College Dr. Harry Langley
praised the college faculty and ad
ministration as well as the chairman of the
self-study steering committee, Randy
Jackson, who wrote the self-study this past
summer. “They really did an excellent
job,” Langley said.
The accreditation, which must be renew
ed every 10 years, involved a visit by the
SACS evaluating committee which made
specific recommendations that the college
had to address in the self-study. “You have
to show that planning, assessment and
evaluation is taking place," Dean Langley
said. “That way you can get measure of

Langley said, “The whole purpose of ac

Four BC ad. staff changes announced
Brevard College President Billy Greer
announced four administrative staff
changes this week, effective June 1.
Don Scarborough, for nine years the col
lege’s Dean of Student Affairs, has been
named Athletic Director and Associate
Director of Development. Scarborough
will continue as Men’s Soccer Head Coach.
Scarborough, who earned his bachelor’s
degree from UNC-Asheville and his
master’s degree from Western Carolina
University, is currently working on his
doctorate in Higher Education Ad
ministration at Vanderbilt University. The
change will allow him more time to work
on his Ph.D., according to Scarborough.
Norm Witek, the present Athletic Direc
tor and coach-emeritus of the highly-
successful BC cross-country program, will
move from the position of A.D. to become
the new Dean of Student Affairs. Witek
says he welcomes the challenge of the job
and thinks that the many years of coaching
and counseling championship athletes will
help him with his new duties. Witek, who
has been with the college since 1968, earn
ed both his bachelor’s and master’s
degrees in physical education from the
University of Tennessee.
Lisanne Masterson, currently the Assis
tant Director of Financial Aid, will become
the Director, succeeding Ed Cunningham,
the financial aid administrator since 1975.
Cunningham will stay on the staff in a
part-time capacity in order to help make
the transition in the Financial Aid Office.
Masterson earned her bachelor’s degree
in mathematics with a teaching certificate
from the University of Tennessee in 1981,
and is scheduled to complete her master’s
degree in education from Western
Carolina University by December 1988.
She has worked and taught at Brevard Col
lege since 1983.
President Billy Greer says of the
changes, “I am personally pleased with
these new assignments and I believ the
people involved are pleased as well.”
