The Streethawks defeated the Taylor Dreamteam in the finals The Streethawks, led by intramural MVP Hal Gordon, completed the season with a perfect 13-0 record to capture the crown. In the championship game, the first half score was close, but the Streethawks pulled away in the second half and never relinquished their lead. The intramural season consisted of 10 regular season games and three play-off games. There were 10 teams in all, seven dorm teams, a townie-lead team, a team with ARA members, and a faculty team. During the course of the season, players were selected to an All-Tournament team. The members included Hal Gordon and Andy Murrow from the Hawks, Chris Nor man form ARA, Lawrence McNab from the Dreamteam and Steve Carin from the Hail-Razors. The Streethawks became the fourth team from Green to win an intramural championship this year. The Green Streethawks celebrate after winning the men’s intramural basketball crown, (photo by B. Kuentzel was unable to take his rockclimbing class climbing on Tuesday, March 17, because of rain. As he walked to the gym trying to think of something to do with his class, Kuentzel noticed something different about the creek—it was polluted. He had just found a project for the class. Kuentzel was upset at the sight of the pollution, but thought it would be an oppor tunistic "problem-solving exercise for the class.” Kuentzel’s comment to the class was, “As rock climbers we are users of the wilderness, and as users of the wilderness we must be stewards of the wilderness.” After his short speech he assigned jobs. He sent two people to the lab with samples to find out what the pollution was. Ano^er two were asked to find out what the pollution standards for this area are. A third group was asked to find what depart ment to call and report pollution to. The rest of the class went to find out where the pollution was coming from. The group searching for the source found two. The major source was coming from a construction sight in town that drained into the creek just above highway 64. The second source came from upstream and originated from a truck. The owners of the truck were changing the transmission fluid and letting the fluid run into the creek. The two students asked to find out the limits and standards for pollution found Jones/Webb wins by two in intramurals by Kim Belanger In women’s intramural action, East Jones defeated Jones/Webb by a score of 46 to 44. Coached by Steve Cain, East was neck and neck with Jones/Webb the entire second half. Coming into the championship game both teams had a record of 3-1. This fact made the rivalry intense before the game began. Jones/Webb Coach Tammy Walden said “I don’t blame the loss on the officials because they aren’t professionals ...but they had a big part in it. Though no matter what the officials say the game is putting the ball in the hoop.” Playing for Jones/Webb were Pam Beasley, Pam Birkney, Amy Cearley, Renee Hundley, Coaches Julie Johnson and Jane Long, Antionette McCray, Kay Richley, and Meme Walters. On the East Jones team, the players were Holly Bailey, Kim Belanger, Sara Booker, Mary Cinkota, Adrienne Elliott, and Shelly Ivey. out they had to write to the Soil and Con servation Standards office in Asheville. Two other students learned that pollution should be reported to the Health Depart ment here in town. After everyone had accomplished their job, they all met in Kuentzel’s office to report their findings. At that time Walt called the Health Department and an inspector came out to assess the situation. The inspector, after seeing the truck situation, asked the owners to put sand down to block the fluid from entering the creek. As for the con struction site runoff, that’s what it was —“runoff.” The inspector told Kuentzel there was nothing he could do in this situation unless it continues for a long period of time. Even if it does continue, the only thing he can do is report it to the office in Asheville, he said. The inspector also said that the rain could be contributing to the large amount of runoff. Greg Gambrel, a student in the class, said, “I think we did something that no one else would have done.” ^ women’s intramural oasketbal! championship. (BC photo by B.R.
