BC women off to regionals
by Bonnie Davis
The BC women’s tennis team heads for
the Region X tournament tomorrow, Fri
day, April 24, at Anderson College, SC.
Coach Jane Long said, “I’m really ex
cited alxHit Regionals without Peace Col
lege being there because we’ve got a good
chance of winning since we’ve beaten the
other two teams.
The tournament will be held over Friday
and Saturday, and the competition will
consist of Lees-McRae College, Anderson,
and Brevard.
TTie ladies finished their regular season of
play last Wednesday as they pulled out a
5-4 win over Anderson. BC went into the
match with two forfeits of the number two
singles and number one doubles positions
due to an ankle injury of Amy Mullins, the
number two seed.
Numt>«;r one player Amy Lister lost her
match to the top-ranked Brazilian player
of Anderson. Lisa Taylor, Bonnie Davis,
and Adrienne Elliott, seeded three, four
and five, won their matches tying up the
score at 3-3. In the number six seed, Anne
Kavanaugh struggled through a two and a
half-hour match. She finally pulled out a
win in the third set which put BC ahead at
4-3 going into the tie breaker.
In doubles action, Davis and Elliott lost
in two sets and again the score was tied at
4-4. The deciding match was up to the
number three doubles team of Kavanaugh
and Taylor who won their match in two
sets making the final score 5-4.
The overall season record stands at 5-2
for Brevard.
Unfortunately, the men’s team hasn’t
fared so well. Their overall season record
stands at 3-10. The men ran into a lot of
trouble this season due to bad weather,
tough competition, and injuries.
Though the season has been a disappoin
ting one. Coach Alexander could find
nothing but praise for his team members
for putting forth the effort and sticking
with the season. He said, “I had people
like Jim Knapp playing well, and Tim
Theuer has come along way and has
steadily improved. And considering the
lack of experience, Jim Ardavany, Jeff
Cabot, and Vic Muriel learned a lot about
tennis along the way and played tough.
The final ladder for the team stands as
follows: Number one seed, Jim Knapp;
number two, Oliver De la Ronciere;
number three, Kent Bird; number four
Jeff Cabot; number five, Tim Theuer;
number six, Vic Muriel; and number
seven, Jim Ardavany.
The men go to Clemson on Friday, April
24 for the Region X tournament against N.

Springfest
weekend goes
over big at BC
by Mark Brom
Yes, the phenomenon of the ever popular
Springfest at Brevard College has come
and gone on the weekend of April 10-12.
Springfest is an annual occurence that
primarily allows the college students to
unwind and to have a good time. Activities
such as a cook-out behind the gym and
several soccer games provided faculty,
students, and prospective students with
plenty of entertainment.
More ‘ reserved" activities off campus,
several forest parties were attended by
hundreds of people, and were in progress
throughout most of the weekend. There
were many alumni and old friends who at
tended
According to most BC students. Spr
ingfest is really a great event, and they
feel that it will continue to be successful in
the future
The basement team consisted of Carol
Ellison, Greg Gambrel, Paige Jackson,
William Johnson, Kevin Kampmeyer, Tim
Nelson, Tom Overstreet, Darrand
Richards, Brian Sewell and Chris
Schryver. The G.D.B.D.’s were coached
by Louis Rosen.
Commenting on the game, Brian Sewell
said, “Our team could have been more
competitive and most likely could have
dominated the game. But overall it was a
good time for all involved.”

The Maryville Scots beat the Brevard
College recruit team 4-0 to win the BC soc
cer tournament held the Springfest
weekend of April 11-12.
Brevard College had a frustrating tour
nament by losing two out of their three
matches. The Tornadoes failed to find
their scoring punch and they were
defeated by West Palm Beach in overtime
2-1, and beaten by the Whirlwinds 1-0.
David Taylor, tournament coordinator,
said the tournament “was good for the
recruits and good for the Brevard team
because it gave them a chance to play
together.” Coach Don Scarborough said,
“The tournament was competitive and
more even.” He added, “The small field
gave the weaker teams a advantage.”
Several BC players expressed their
disappointment after the game. R.T.
Myers said, “The way we played was
disappointing because we were the best
skilled team out there, but we just couldn’t
put it together.”
The tournament concluded the men’s
soccer spring season. But everyone can
look forward to watching them next fall as
they defend their Region X title.
