Quality and variety are highlighted this fall in Brevard College’s Division of Fine Arts. Steven Kelly, the new Acting Chairman of the Division of Fine Arts, says, “I am really excited about our programs and what they will offer to our students and of course the Brevard Community.” AH of the areas of art, drama and music will be busy preparing for showings, con certs, recitals and productions. Kelly says, “I am very proud of our faculty and students in the fine arts. I think they are some of the best you will find at any col lege. I hope the entire college community will take advantage of what they have to offer as well as the guest artists we have coming to our campus.” Initially, Kelly points to the Aug. 25 con cert by the Highland Duo, featuring BC maestro Anthony Sirianni on piano and violinist Kate Ransom performing at the Brevard First United Methodist Church at 8:15 p.m. During the year, concerts will be given by the College’s four music ensembles — the Collegiate Singers, the Show Choir, the Concert Band and the Jazz Ensemble. Dr. Greer is also receiving his second doctorate degree later this month. This summer he completed his work for another Ph.D. in Higher Education Ad ministration from Georgia State Universi ty- Former Director of Choral Music Hugh Floyd has been awarded a two-year Creative Arts Fellowship to the University of Illinois-Urbana. He will return to the College in the fall of 1989. Director of the Coltrane Art Center Tim Murray was selected to enter a piece of sculpture this spring in a show sponsored by People Magazine at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) in Winston-Salem. Professor of Religion Preston Woodruff is taking a year’s leave of absence to study in England. He has been awarded Visiting Scholar status at Oxford where he will be doing research. Associate Professor of English Ken Chamlee is on leave this year to work toward his doctorate in creative writing at UNC-Greensboro. Chairman of the Division of Fine Arts Virginia Tillotson is stepping down from that position this fall to allow her more classroom time... Steve Kelly will serve as acting chairman. Director of the Office of Financial Aid Ed Cunningham was feted at a retirement dinner in May and presented a set of new golf clubs. Dean of Student Affairs Norm Witek and Athletic Director Don Scarborough have assumed their new duties after exchang ing positions this summer. Jock Lauterer, Director of Public Infor mation and Instructor of Journalism, led a workshop on feature writing for the North Carolina Press Association Community Newspaper spring convention in Chapel Hill, and he attended several booksignings for his new photo-documentary book, “Running on Rims — Appalachian Pro files,” which has been featured recently in Country Living Magazine. Associate Professor of English Sarah Barnhill eamed her master’s of fine arts degree in creative writing from Warren Wilson College this summer. Admissions Counselor Mikal Peveto won the July 18 Peach Festival lOK roadrace in Gaffney, S.C. with a time of 32:18. He was followed by BC runner Sonni Dyer of Fayetteville, who will be retuming this fall. Brevard’s Paul Carpenter won the 5K. Carpenter, who ran strong for BC last year, will be running for the Tar Heels at UNC-Chapel Hill. An incoming BC freshman. Brad Dobson of Columbus, Ga., finished second in the 5K. A good year/From page 1 Guidelines and listen to their resident directors they will come away with the feeling that we’re trying to treat them like responsible young adults.” Finally, Greer concludes, “This is a good school. There are pockets of greatness around here and there. This year, there is potential to pull it all together.”
