Page 10 The Clarion November 4, 1987 Brevard BC runners slay all but State in Raleigh meet By Kenny Monteith The Brevard College Women’s cross country team took Raleigh by storm as they captured second place at the North Carolina Intercollegiate Championships, Oct, 15. N.C. State, ranked 4th nationally, ran away early, but BC freshman Alice Gaines stayed close behind. At the 1-mile mark, Gaines ran in 10th place and gradually kept moving up until she crossed the finish line in 7th place with a time of 18:55. Teammates Marjorie Hawk and Kelli George became the next Lady Tornadoes to complete the race. Hawk’s time of 19:30 secured her 9th place, while George countered with 19:52 and 11th place. “I think they may have b^n a little overwhelmed at Furman,” said Coach Dave Rinker. “Today they just went out and raced for 5,000 meters. I was very im pressed and pleased.” Janice Wilder and Barbara Burton finished back-to-back in 18th and 19th place with times of 20:28 and 20:34, respec tively. ‘The key to this group is for them to get into the race mentally,” added Rinker. “Everybody has bad days, but these girls are tough enough and talented enough to be good even on a bad day if they’ll just race.” Freshman Alice Gaines led the women’s cross country team to a tenth place finish out of 17 teams at the Furman Invitational, Oct. 10. Gaines’ time of 19:54 secured 34th place in the race which includes universities S?. Teammates Marjorie Hawk and Kelli George helped the Lady Tornadoes as they crossed the finish line with times of 20:33 and 20:39, respectively. “Kelli George ran the best race on the team,” said Coach Dave Rinker. “Alice Gaines and Marjorie Hawk both did a good job, but there is more there.” Freshmen Barbara Burton and Janice Wilder also placed in the 5,000 meter race. Henes dropped back at four miles, so Erickson and Piper battled it out until Erickson slipped back at 5.5 miles, but he still held on for second place in 24:40. Behind Erickson, the rest of the Tornado runners battled against North Carolina State, ranked 16th in the country in Divi sion 1 play. Freshman Geoff Moore took 10th place in 25:29, while teammate Jeff Pajak closed in on 12th place with a time of 25:33. Sophomore Glenn MacDonald followed behind Pajak as MacDonald cap tured 13th place in 25:40. other top finishers were Scott Dvorak, Brad Dodson and Steve Kandarach. The Brevard College men’s cross coun try team ran its best team race of the year at Furman Oct. 10 as they placed third behind perennial powers Florida and Auburn, who is first in the SEC. Sophomore John Erickson led the way for the Tornadoes as he captured first place with a time of 30:36. Erickson took the lead early, but later he dropped back to allow Florida’s Mike Bilyeu to take the lead. Breaking away from the pack at the 4-mile mark, the two ran side by side until Erickson took the lead for good on a series of hills on the back of the course. Jeff Pajak became the second Brevard College runner to cross the finish line. His time of 31:40 was good enough for 13th place in the 10,000 meter race. Freshman Brad Dodson clinched 21st place with his time of 31:59. while team mates Glenn MacDonald and Geoff Moore rounded out the scoring for the race. “We went into the meet aiming to get out and race the first 5 then hold on,” said Coach Dave Rinker. “They did a great job. John is starting to realize how good he is. I was pleased with the entire group. We are coming along.” other top finishers include Scott Dvorak, Steve Kandrich. and Brad Bartlett.
