Page 4 Jan. 29. 1990 The Clarion Literary magazine taking submissions Classic marimbist Leigh Howard Stevens will perfrom at Dunham Auditorium on the campus of Brevard College, Thursday, Feb. 1, at 8:15 p.m. Stevens' celebrated musicianship has inspired national and interna tional critical acclaim. His book, "Method of Movement," has been translated into four languages. The concert will range from works by contem porary composers to the Preludes and Fugues of J.S. Bach. The concert, a Life and Culture Arts Series event, is free. by Sean Frazier Chiaroscuro Editor We are now accepting submissions for the Chiaroscuro. Now, you may be asking yourself, "Self, just what is this Chiaroscuro?" And you may ask yourself, "Self, let's go look it up!" Self does just that, and finds that, according to the dictionary in the library, chiaroscuro is defined as 1. the technique of using light and shade in a pictorial representation. 2. The arrangement of light and dark elements in a pictorial work of art and 3. The use of contrast in literary works. Now you may ask yourself, "How can these possibly go together in some legitimate format here at Brevard College? Words and Art?" Here's the answer to your queries, Brevard College annually publishes a literary and art magazine. Any sub missions, poetry , short stories, drawings, etchings, etc. are welcomed. The deadline for submissions is March 1. Now you may ask yourself, "Self, how would I go about getting my choice pieces of work in this creative mag?" Since said "SelT in this instance might be clueless, we at the Chiaroscuro are going to give the answer to that most intriguing question. Submissions may be taken to the BC News Bureau, also known as Beam Administration 104, (Jock Lauterer's office) or they may be given to C. Sean Frazier, p.o. box 5101, Brevard College, Brevard, N.C., 28712. (Hint: one may use the in-campus mail slot that is in the post office here on campus.) The Chiaroscuro is open to both faculty and students, so please submit, submit, submit, all those who are interested in becoming a Chiaroscurist. The magazine is scheduled for publication in late April. Art exhibits up at Sims The Sims Art Center at Brevard College is hosting an exhibit of student work this month. The former student union, which is gradually making the transformation into a full-fledged art building, provides the needed exhibit space not available in the old Coltrane Building. The new art show will feature the best work of the fall semester art students at BC. An open house was held Monday, Jan. 22. The January showing was a collection of some 2(X) postcards from Southeastern area high schools titled "Mailable Art." §4 Jo Pumphrey's art students painted murals at the Brevard Racquet Club. The artists are, top to bottom, Jeff Angelo, Cathy Carris, Christal Dalton and David Epstein.
