The varsity men's basketball team
has been busy the past few weeks.
Thursday, Feb. 8 through Feb. 11, the
Tornadoes travelled to North Greenville,
Columbia, S.C. and USC-Salkahatchie.
Then BC came home to play the two
top-ranked teams in the region,
Louisburg and Chowan.
BC began their four-day road trip on
Feb. 8 at North Greenville, last year's
regional powerhouse. The Mounties
took a quick lead and were out front by
12 points at halftime. BC never gave up
and tied the game at 69-all with 25
seconds left But the Tornadoes couldn't
sink two crucial free throws. North
Greenville hit a 15-foot jumper with
seconds remaining on the clock to lake
the win.
Coach Doug Rogers said, "I'm really
proud of the guys. They really fought
hard and never gave up." The leading
scorers for Brevard were Marcus Allen
with 17 points, Jamie Cousin and
Harvey Cozart with 12 each.
Two days later, the Tornadoes were
deep in South Carolina where they
played Columbia College and always
tough USC-Salkehatchie on Feb. 11.
Columbia College came out ready,
pumped up from t)cating Lees-McRae
the night before, 71-64. Brevard fell
behind 44-28, then battled back, coming
from behind on the strength of three-
pointers by Cleon Dickerson, Nate Fear-
rington and Wayne Frechette.
It was Fearrington who sealed the
win for BC. The Chapel Hill
sophomore sank a 15-foot jumper with
20 seconds remaining in the game to
give the Tornadoes the 74-72 victory.
Scoring for the Tornadoes was
balanced. Four players were in double
figures including Fearrington and
Marcus Allen with 14 points each to
lead BC. They were followed by
Dickerson and Frechette with 10 apiece.
BC ended their four-day road trip at
USC-Salkehatchie and found themselves
in another close game. This time, the
outcome was not to be like the
Columbia game; USC-S won the game
by two points. Allen and Fearrington
led the Tornadoes with 26 and 22 points
respectively. Frechette contribued 16,
including four three-pointers. Harvey
Cozart added 15.
After this long and strenuous road
trip, the Tornadoes Hnally got to come
home. But BC would have to paly the
two toughest teams in the regions:
Louisburg and Chowan.
When BC hosted Louisburg on
Friday, Feb. 16, the first half of the
game was relatively even. But just as
the half was ending, a Louisburg player
was fouled and he converted both free
throws to give his team a six point
lead.,
In the second half, BC came out
fired up. The Tornadoes outscored
Louisburg 12-6 to tie the game at 56-all
on a Frechette lay-up. But the Tornadoes
couldn't hang on, and Louisburg kept
inching away. BC missed several free
throws near the end that could have
made a difference. The visitors finally
pulled away for the 81-74 finale.
BC's scOTing was again balanced, led
by Frechette withl5, followed by
Fearrington and Cowan with 13 each.
Allen and Cozart had 11 and 10
respectively
Saturday, Feb. 17, the Tornadoes
faced Chowan, and again found
themselves down at halftime, this time
by the score of 32-25.
They battled back to make it a two-
point game at the 15 minute mark.
Then Chowan lit up, outscoring BC 29-
11 in the next eight minutes, extending
their lead to as much as 20 points. A
tired and frustrated BC team lost 76-60.
The Tornadoes were led by Allen
with 17 points and fearring and
Dickers.^” with 11 each.
