The baseball team is in the planning stage, as coaching choices are being narrowed down and preparations are being made for the start of a new era at BC. Baseball, which had been a part of the school's tradition from the beginnings in the 30's, was phased out in 1968-69. According to Athletic Director David Rinker, there are about five applicants left for the coaching job out of a total of 58. "We are looking for someone with good fundamental skills and with the same goals and expectations necessary for Brevard College," says Rinker. The new coach will have approximately IS months to get prepara tions underway and Finalized. The new coach and the new team will have a light, abbreviated schedule in the fall of 1991 and will play a full spring schedule in 1992. As for recruiting, the new coach will do that during the preliminary 15 months before the season. There will be approximately 25 to 40 recruits from all over the Southeast and possibly other areas as well. The athletes will also have scholarships available to them. In regard to the baseball field, Rinker says that the construction and changing of the cornfield into the baseball field will begin in the summer and will hopefully be finished by the time students return to BC in the fall of 1990. The team will compete in the always tough Region X, facing such well-known opponents as Lees-McRae and Spartanburg Methodist. Rinker adds, "The team will be able to perform at the very high Brevard College standards and expectations." Students at BC seem to think that baseball will be an added edge to an already competetive school. "There will be a lot of excitement for the first year of baseball and some fierce com petition," said freshman T.J. Me Elaney. complished all my goals that I intended to do." Harvey is thinking about UNC- Charlotte after Brevard. While attending UNC-Charlotte, Harvey will get a degree in graphic design. He will not play basketball unless a scholarship is offered. Harvey says, "I am still interested in continuing my basketball career." Harvey said his best memory of BC basketball was this: "being on the free throw line in the clutch with two seconds left on the clock. I made both free throws to win the game over North Greenville. They were ranked 8th in the nation," he said. "I enjoyed Brevard socially and academically," he added. "It was a thrill playing basketball for the Tornadoes. Marcus Allen said, "my career at BC has helped my outside shot, my bail- handling, and perimeter shot Overall it was a good two-year experience." Allen is looking at Pfeiffer College where he'd like to plav basketball. , Marcus had a best memory ofBC. It was: *beating North (jreenville at home. They were ranked eighth in the nation." Here are some of Marcus' stats: Last year average, 15.4 points per game. This year he averaged 16.0 points per game. He had 5 rebounds per game. His free throw percentage was,68 % last year and 65% this year. Allen said, "Know your weaknesses and capitalize on your strengths." Jamie Cousin said his BC career went like this, "I feel that it was all right. I feel that there was a lot we needed to work on as a team, but also as individuals. Basically it was all right and a fun season." Jamie is looking at Eastern Carolina University, though he will not play basketball for them. Cousin does not feel like he is ready. Jamie said his best memory at Brevard College was beating North Greenville at home. Cleon Dickerson said of his career at BC: "It prepared me for the next level of basketball. I've gotten a lot of experience. I feel more comfortable about playing basketball next year." Cleon is looking at the University of Pittsburg at Bradford. He would like to play basketball if he can. He also said his best memory was "beating North Greenville at home." Nate Fearrington commented on his career, "It went fairly well. Could have been better if everyone pushed each other. Overall players and people made something of it, made us enjoy some parts of it. It was good college ball experience. " Nate at this moment is undecided about where he will attend school next year. Nate also says his best memory was "beating North Carolina at home, also, missing curfew with the guys," Nate said with a little smile.
