Page 8 April 30, 1990 The Clarion Miss BC Charlotte Safrit prepares for year Earth Day activities 'at BC: cleaning the creek. Student Affairs announcements by Michelle Layman Clarion Reporter Lights! Camera! Action! Live from Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh, North Carolina, it’s the 1990 Miss North Carolina Pageant, the preliminary lo the Miss America Pageant Charlotte Safrit, Miss Brevard College, is well on her way to competing in the Miss North Carolina Pageant. The pageant will be held on June 30 Competition begins on Sunday, June 23, where all the contestants will arrive for the contest. The rest of the week will consist of Monday, interviews; Tuesday, all day rehearsals; Wednesday, talent; Thursday, swimsuit; Friday, evening gown; and Saturday, the final competition being shown on live television. Safrit said, "The hardest thing has been exercising, especially with a cast on. I must be physically and mentally fit Another factor has been money — trying to get donations and sponsors." During the week of the pageant, the forty-six contestants will be staying a Peace College. With all of the contes tants staying at the same place, the chance of forming some lasting friendships is high. As part of Safrit's reign as Miss Brevard College, she has had to make numerous appearances and community work. Safrit participates in two main programs which include DARE, and the Book-It program. The Book-It program promotes literacy in the schools. Safrit said, "We are trying to get little kids to read and leam to enjoy reading." Pizza Hut, Safrit's major sponsor, is also a sponsor of the Book-It program. Other appearances that Safrit is making include the Statesville Dogwood Festival on April 22, during which all of the queens rode in a parade, and Pizza Hut day on April 30, where Safrit will receive half of the proceeds that will be made that day. Safrit will also be selling boxer shorts to help raise money and showing her entire wardrobe to be worn in the Miss North Carolina Pageant. The Wardrobe Showing will be in Dunham Auditorium on May 3 at 7:30 pm. "By participating in the pageant I am taking on a lot of responsibility. I have grown mentally, physically, and socially. It has also helped me in communicating with other people," said Safrit. "My self-confidence has increased tremendously. It's a dirty job, but someone has got to do it." In conclusion, Safrit commented on her philosophy about pageants. Safrit said, "I want to be the best person I can possibly be because that is the art of competition. It doesn't matter if you win a crown or not, you are a winner anyway and have gained self- satisfaction. *Cindy Pickens and Jan Gillian are planning a luau for Wednesday, May 2 at 5:00. There will be an ice cream bar and Mark Lippard, a juggler, will be entertaining the students. It will be at the rose garden outside of the cafeteria. *The BC Service Corps will place boxes in the lobby of each residence hall during exams so that students can place nonperishable food items and clothing in them. Hopefully, this will eliminate students from having to throw away a lot of these items as they have done in the past. The items will be donated to local charity. *The Pancake Breakfast prepared by the faculty for the students wil be held Friday, May 4. The cost is $1.25 and profits go to Project Inside-Out. "■College Bookstores of America will be taking over an operation of the bookstore fron ARA Services when the bookstore moves to the new Student Union. *The Art Department is having Security lock the Art Building at 5:00 on weekdays and keep it locked on weekends. *Those graduates involved in the graduation ceremony on Sunday, May 13, and those who wish to remain to see friends be graduated MUST COME TO THE STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICE AND FORMALLY REQUEST TO REMAIN IN THE RESIDENCE HALLS BEYOND THURSDAY, MAY 9, 1990. *To all students- before leaving Brevard College for the semester, YOU MUST FORMALLY CHECK OUT OF YOUR ROOM WITH YOUR RD. Housekeeping will moniitor stwage and retrieval on the following dates: Monday- Thursday, May 7-10 from 1:00-3:00. Rental refrigerators must be returned by Monday, May 7, 1990 to the Jones BC's Jo Pumphrey, right, won Best in Show at the Third Annual Transylvania Fine Arts and Crafts Exhibition, currently showing through May 4 at Sims Art Center at BC.
