"There’s a whole new feeling and attitude," says Lin Redmond, one of last year's SGA vice-presidents, "The personal care that the administration and faculty give to the students is even clearer than before. We have tangible features which will make campus life the experience that students are looking for." During the late spring and summo-, many changes have taken place at Brevard College, including completion of new facilities and conveniences. In addition, the rebirth of the BC baseball program is generating a lot of excitement on campus. Also, this fall for the first time ever, BC hosu a national sports championship meet when the NJCAA Cross Country Nationals come to town. Among the new facilities on campus arc; COLTRANE COMMONS: The single most important new building on campus, the approx. $1 million structure houses an all-new bookstore and campus post office. Student kninge (with new large-scrcen TV), conference rooms, snack bar. Game room (with pool tables). Commuter student lounge, yearbook room, and offices for the Dean of Student Affairs and his staff. The Commons features new furniture, wallpaper and carpet, has been designated a smoke-finee facility. SIMS ART BUILDING: The former student union is now a full-fledged art building, complete with a new gallery completed last spring. The switch to Sims more than doubles the art department's available space for classrooms and studios. The ground floor includes a darkroom and space for exhibits. The second floor has classrooms and offices. The pricetag for this facility was kept to a low $22,5(X) because much of the work was done in- house. TRACK: The new Tom Breeden Track was completed this summer after undergoing $90,000 worth of resurfacing, lining and renovation. DORM UPGRADES: Lounges of Jones and Beam dorms have been redecorated at an approximate cost of $30-35,000. BASEBALL PROGRAM: Brev^d College's reinstated baseball program got under way this summer after the hiring of Coach Rick Robinson who quickly set about signing up his first team. Also, construction began in June on the new baseball field, located just below Ross Hall. The pricetag for the field (including the grassing, fencing, dugout, etc.) will be close to $50,000. Practice will begin this fall for the first season, one year away in the fall of 1991 TELECOMMUNICATIONS: The College, in conjunction with utility companies is in the process of phasing in an ambitious plan: offering individual students phones in rooms, cable TV and hook-up to the campus academic com puter network. According to Dale Wiener, BC Director of Financial Affairs, "We're spending a lot of money up front to make this service possible." Areas of Jones dorm will be the first to offer these features this fall. The process will be on-going and eventually the entire campus will be covered. Individual students can make arran gements through the local utility companies for these services. In addition. Many power and telephone lines went underground this summer, as the College endeavors to further beautify the campus and update the phone system. GYM: The Boshamer Gymnasium Turn to page 5
