Frank teaches guitar at East Carolina University. His concert is a part of the BC Fine Arts Calendar. 'Pops' Concert kicks off BC recital year Oct. 7 BC's singers and instrumentalists team up for a joint POPS concert 4 p.m., Sunday Oct. 7, at Dunham Auditorium. An afternoon of POPS music will be represented at Brevard College, Sunday, Oct. 7, at 4p.m. in the Dunham Music Center auditorium on the campus of Brevard College. The joint concert will feature the Brevard College Jazz Ensemble, Concert Band, Chamber Choral and Collegiate Singers teaming up on the highlights from the musicals "Oklahoma" and "Fiddler on the Roof," Sousa marches and a wide variety of jazz. Jazz Ensemble Director Steve Kelly says, "We felt the POPS Concert was an excellent way to start the new year and to introduce the public to our new group of students. We hope to see everyone there!" Kelly's instrumentalists will be teaming up with the vocal talents of the BC singers, directed by Mark Nabholz. Though several programs have already been presented at the College this academic year, the POPS Concert officially kicks off the concert and recital year in the Music Department. Kelly, chairman of the Division of Fine Arts, says, "The Music Department has scheduled some outstanding recitals and concerts for the upcoming year. We usually try to supplement the offerings of the Life and Culture Series with solo recitals featuring guest artists, BC music faculty and student performances. This year guests will come from all over the country. The recitals are great oppor tunities for our students and the public to hear some outstanding music." According to Kelly, the BC Music Department is experiencing its sixth consecutive year for growth with another recwd enroUmenL It was recent ly re-accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, making BC one of the only 19 two-year institutions accredited by this agency. Student activities planned by Noah Milner Clarion Reporter During the month of October, there are numerous activities that the student body is encouraged to attend. On Oct. 7, there will be a whitewater rafting trip down the Ocoee River. A $35 fee was due September 24. Those who haven't paid and are still interested should contact John Dodson in the Coltrane Commons gameroom. The group will leave from the front of A.G. Myers Dining Hall at 6:30 a.m., and will return at 7 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, however those going will need to bring cash for dinner. October also will be the month for Intramural sports. Flag football begins on Oct. 8. Tennis, both double and single matches, will run from Oct. 1-5. Those interested can sign up in the Coltrane Commons gameroom. Also in October, on Wednesdays and Fridays at 7 p.m., movies will be shown in the student union lobby. On Wednesdays, recent releases will be shown and on Fridays, either Westerns or action films will be shown. The SGA is working on projects dealing with the academic honor code, better security in dorms, and visitation. If anyone is interested in attending these meetings or has any ideas, they are en couraged to do so.
