The C^iariQn November 10. 1992 Paye 2 When all is said and done... Oh, say can you see ... NOT! by April Liebe Clarion Editor As I enter into the gates of this great learning institution, I see the glorious name of Brevard College upon the sign before me. As I quietly stroll across the campus, I look upon stately buildings with plaques of honored alumni, a Bell Tower of great grandeur, and a white cross representing the greatest sacrifice of all. I lift my eyes and see the beautiful mountains that have been seen by countless students of the present and the past. As I take all of this in, I come to a single solitary flag pole standing bare of what it was raised for. Where is our American flag? As we were students preparing for our college years, every school we attended, from elementary to high school, proudly displayed the American flag. Now that we have arrived here and are preparing for the goals of our life, how soon we forget. The flag is honored at sports events, from Little League Baseball to major league baseball, from Pop WamCT football to the NFL. The flag is a symbol of freedom. Not only freedom of speech or freedom of the press, but a symbol of our personal freedom. The freedom to choose. Whether we want to get a job or continue our education. A lot of people in other countries do not have this freedom. Men and women died for this freedom. They died fer this country. That also is what the flag represents: our country. One thing that makes me upset is that the families of the men and women who died for our country often rrj CLARION Apnl Liebe Editor Sandy Kaighin Lorrin Wolf Assistant Editors Will Parker Sport \ Editor Kelley Hulsey Photo Editor Brandi Duckworth Debbie Duncan Production Assistants Brad Kinizey Advisor Brian McKeone Heather Derrington Stephanie Gardner James F. Is it somewhere folded up out of sight to be displayed only when important figures come to visit? I saw the flag wave a couple of times. 1 saw it at the beginning of school, maybe once or twice, and at homecoming. Do we have to have alumni give us a gold flag before we display it? Has such apathy become so common place in the spirit of this campus that we can not even wave the American flag? The City Hall, the Courthouse, high schools and grammar schools wave their flags. What separates the College from the rest of Brevard, besides the front gates. Is this where patriotism stops; at the gates? What are we saying to our foreign exchange students? What are we saying to our community from which we ask support? Is it that we need to assign Honor Guards? If so; HND THEM. It is as much of a disgrace to hide our flag as it is to spit on it or bum it. Let’s display our national flag here on campus, for all to see. LETTERS Dear Editor: Thank you for your article in the September 21, 1992 issue of the Clarion about Mr. Scott Yager, instmetor in Physics and Mathematics at Brevard College, and other new faculty. In addition to Mr. Yager’s B.S. degree in physics from the University of Central Florida, Mr. Yager also has a M.S. degree in physics from the same institution. All of the Math/Science Division faculty teaching university- parallel courses have master’s degrees in their disciplines, and many hold doctoral degrees. Sincerely, Jeffery Llewellyn, Chair, Division of Matliematics and Natural Science What do BC students think of Bill Clinton, our new president of the United States? Compiled by Sandy Kaighin “I want to move out of the United States because I feel that Clinton’s term will be a repeat of the Carter years.” - Loirin Wolf “I am scared of the change.” - Beth Chapman “So, so.” - LaTonya Abraham “I am glad he won because he is a democrat and we needed a change.” - Christine Desaine “Clinton is young and he takes into consideration what the young generation has to say.” - Christy Waldroop “I am very disappointed, of the three candidates Clinton is the worst. Can’t blame Bush for America’s problems. Hope Clinton won’t cause problems. What also scares me is the fact that we have a democratic house with a democratic president, who knows what is going to happen.” - Becky Frankwiz “It’s a sad day in America when we choose a wife cheating, draft dodging, tax raising, issue waffling, liar, as our president. God help the United States of America.” - James F. Woodley
