Andre Inniss Brings Home National Championship by Will Parker Sports Editor Last month, on March 5 and 6, the Brevard College Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track Teams participated in the National Championships at Kansas State University. There were 365 men’s teams competing and 29 in the women’s. Top Brevattk>-finishers were as follows: Andre’ Innis is the National Champion in the 1,000 meter run, with a time of 2:28.8 He was also selected as an All American. Chris Huffstickler, .Steven Kahn, Bobby Gardner, and Eric Smoot came in second in the 4x 800 relay, and all four earned All-American status. James Porter came in fourth place in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:54, and also made All-American. Franz Battle came in fourth place in the women’s 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:55.4, which was a school record. She also earned All-American status. In the Men’s Distance Medley, with a time of 10:07.8 and coming in second place were Eric Smoot, Steven Kahn, Andre’ Innis, and Chris Huffstickler. Robert Johnson came in seventh place in the triple jump with 48’7”, and Vida Jones came in ninth place in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6:40. Coach Dave Rinker said, “We had an excellent meet overall. Seven athletes made All-American and the men’s team ended up in seventh place. Andre’ Innis obviously did a great job in the 1,000. He ran a tremendous race from a tactical standpoint. He grabbed a position near the front, stayed away from being boxed, then unloaded on the field over the last 200. “Our men’s 4 x 400 relay was a real surprise. Each man did exactly what they were supposed to do and on top of that, they r^n up to their present potential,” Rinker said. Chris Huffstickler led off and did a great job of keeping us in the race. After Chris, Steven moved us into fourth place, Bobby ran his fastest 800 ever to move us to the shoulder of third place. Eric Smoot anchored us home with a great carry of 1:51.6. “Franz Battle was our lone female All-American,” continued Rinker. “She did a super job as she ran 6 seconds faster than she had ever run before. “James Porter was our seventh All- American, and although his time was not that fast, he ran a smart race. He was running against probably one of the toughest fields in the meet.” Tennis Season Underway by Will Parker Sports Editor The tennis season is underway and so is the Brevard College Women’s Tennis team. Currently the team is 2 and 3, however, several matches have rescheduled due to the weather. The top players on the team are Lori Tomlin, Heidi Fais and Paige Tair, all of whom are freshman. Last year the team was second in the region. The team consists of four freshman, and according to Coach Bartlinski things are shaping up great for next year.
