the Boshamer Gymnasium.
Convocation is the official opening of
the academic semester.
This spring’s observance will be
expanded to honor the institution’s past,
present, and future. Alumni of Weaver

the three sister institutions which
merged to form Brevard College, will be
in attendance and will receive honorary
diplomas from Brevard College.
In addition, an Installation program

College, will be installed during the
Convocation program.
At 4 p.m. on the same day of
Convocation, a dedication of the Stone
Wall as an official site on the National
Register of Historic Places is planned.
The wall, located at the comer of Broad
and French Broad streets, was built as a
WPA project during the depths of the
Great Depression. Dr. Dean W.

February, National Afro-American
History Month, was brought about for
the purpose of educating the population
of the United States about important
black figures and experiences of the past
that are left out of our basic school
education. .
Did you ever wonder why the
introduction of Africans into America
was slavery? Slavery did not mark the
beginning of black peoples existence so
why does the education begin there?
National Afro-American History
Month actually began as Negro History
Week, the second week of February, in
1926, to concentrate on the
accomplishments and history of African-
Americans. The founders also wanted to
preserve historical manuscripts and
publish informative literature.
The evolution of Afro-American
History Month actually began as a
small association in Chicago in 1915
with the same ideas of education and
preservation in mind. Although the
association went through hard times,
with the dedication of Carter G.
Woodson the Negro History Week was
commemorated.
Woodson was quoted as saying that
the purpose of Afro-American History
Month is “to stage dramatizations and
other exercises in order to demonstrate
the role of the Negro in the past and
secure for the race the same
considerations in the curriculum that we
give others.”
It is essenual for each individual to,
educate theirselves to the untold truths
of the past. After educating ourselves,
we must speak out in the classroom to
help educate others. The Brevard Library
has a National Afro-American History
Month display of black authors and
other important African-Americans that
have changed the world we hve m. If
you take the time to educate yourself
you will be amazed at the amount of
unspoken history and misconceptions
you may have learned. It is past time to
fill in the missing pages of our history
and English books, and there is no
better time to start than National Afro-
American History Month.
