Baseball team roars to impressive season by Ben Voegele Sports Editor Many figured that the early success of the 1994 Brevard Baseball team would eventually run out, however, with a 19-5 (3-1 in the Region X) overall record, the Tornadoes are proving they’re for real. Solid pitching has been the difference for Brevard this year. Sophomore Joe Curtis is currently 5-0 with an earned run average just under two. Steve Sanders is also currently undefeated at 4-0, and both Tim Brown (3 wins, 2 losses) and Chad Newton (3 wins, 1 loss, 5 saves) are having a solid season. Hitting has been above average as well. Jon Placko, Avery Rogers, and Scott Pastushok are the top three hitters Track and Field Coach David Rinker feels that so far the 1994 outdoor track and field season is off to a fast start, and is full of promise. ‘The season basically has just begun; however, everyone is running well and training hard. At this point. I’m very pleased,” said Rinker. On March 25-26 Brevard College completed it’s first seasonal meet against the Raleigh Relays. Many of the members of the BC men’s team set personal records, as the meet kicked off the beginning of another successful year for Brevard. _ Sophomore Charles Miller should lead the way for the men in the field events, throwing both the discuss and the javelin. in the Region X. Brent Payton who, over spring break, had three home runs in five days and leads the team in overall home runs with four. Leadoff hitter Brian McGinnis was named Region X player for the week of March 19 through the 26. Shortstop Benji Gecy and second baseman Chris Rodriguez are also having strong year. Brevard’s aggressive style of play includes a devastating hit and run attack offense. It has been hard work, team dedication, and so far, knock on wood, an injury-free year. All of these combined factors have coach Rusty Stroupe’s team setting a school record with an impressive 13-game winning streak, scoring close to seven runs per game. Brian McGinnis led off with a double as Brevard scored three runs in the first inning. Freshmen Chad Faircloth and Benji Gecy hit homeruns for the Tornadoes and Joe Curtis pitched five solid innings for the win, and Chad Newton pitched well in relief. Game number two wasn’t so lucky for Brevard. Tim Brown started but Louisberg put six runs on the scoreboard in a hurry. Rallying around relief pitcher Richard Myers, the Tornadoes were able to tie the game 6-6 in the seventh inning. Unfortunately, Chad Newton couldn’t hold the lead as a sacrifice fly scored the go ahead run and Franz Battie will lead the women in middle distance. Anne Gaines will lead the way in long distance and Kim Hatfield should do the same in the Brevard fell in a close one, 7-6. Tuesday, March 29, saw the Brevard Tornadoes at home against Cuyahoga. A game dominated again from the start, Brevard won easily 10-5. Brevard’s next games are March 31 against Cuyahogan in a double header. This Saturday, April 2nd, Brevard will go against Anderson College at I p.m. here at Brevard. April 16, Brevard takes on Mars Hill College in a doubleheader under the lights at Brevard High School beginning at 5 p.m. Come support the Tornadoes as they continue on their way to what could be BC’s most successful year ever. sprint. Look once again for a strong year from one of the nation’s strongest teams, the Brevard College Tornados. Coach Joe Bartlinski feels that this year’s team has strong overall leadership and solid skills. He feels the team is easily capable of being ranked in the top 15 in the nation. Weather permitting, it should continue to be a solid year for Brevard’s women’s tennis team. Poor weather not enough to keep Brevard’s women’s tennis team from starting strong Poor weather has limited the Brevard College women’s tennis team to just two matches, but nonetheless, Brevard has won both. The wins came February 26 against Piedmont College, and March 6 against Limestone College. Wfeather forced the cancellation of what would of been key matches against Spartanburg Methodist, as well as Western Carolina University. So far it’s been the sophomores leading the way. Lori Tomlin, Heidi Fais, Carrie Alter, and Paige Tairhave all been key factors in Brevard’s early successes. teams on pace for another successful year
