The Clarion March 31. 1994 Page 6 Student Spotlight Country girl comes to Brevard College by Kelly Wright Clarion Staff Writer Amy Cuccia represents a younger part of the BC campus. At only 17 years old, she is a freshman here at BC. Her young age, though, has not kept her from p-oving herself and being active on campus. Cuccia is at Brevard on a full academic scholarship which requires her to work in the math lab five hours a week. She also finds time to tutor outside of the math lab while maintaining her GPA of 3.7. Cuccia lives in Nashville, Tenn., and considers herself a true country girl because of her love for country music. Some of her hobbies include dancing, hanging out with friends, and simply having fun. When asked how she has liked her first year at BC, Amy replied, “I like it and I’m looking forward to Brevard College on the home stretch of $16 million campaign by Missy McGill Clarion Staff Writer On January 1, 1990, Brevard College began the “Brevard 2000: Building for the Future” campaign. The goal of the campaign is to gain $16 million by January 1, 1995. So far they have raised $15 million. The leadership for this undertaking has been provided by the Dr. Don Scarborough, Brevard College Vice-President for Institutional Advancement. The money’s purpose is centered around faculty development, personnel salaries, library books, annual scholarships, academic and cultural programming, upgrades in computer technology, professional journals, campus maintenance, and many student activities. There is already evidence of the campaign’s success. Just recently there were renovations of Boshamer Gymnasium’s gym floor and pool filtration system, as well as the renovations to Sims Art Building. The library also has a new set of Encyclopedia Briiannica. We all have the opportunity to enjoy the efforts of the campaign through the Poets and Writers series. Energy Conservation projects, the Forrest Transportation Fund, and several scholarships. There are many more existing examples of the campaign’s accomplishments. Although all of the campaign funded projects may not seem to directly affect you, just look around at the changes being made. They are everywhere. Our water is precious: save it for the future by Missy McGill Clarion Staff Writer Theodore Roosevelt once said, when referring to Lake Erie, “I want the people of Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania to aid in a campaign for pure drinking water from the lake. You can’t get pure water and put your sewage in the lake. I say this on behalf of the children.” It is just as important for us not to waste water as it is for us to keep the water that is fresh clean enough to use. Only one percent of the water in the world is fresh water. Only one third of the water that passes through treatment plants is safe. With so little fresh and safe water, it is important not to waste the water we do have available now. Always remember to turn faucets all of the way off and chcck for leaking faucets. Please notify someone if you find a leaking faucet. Remember the saying “If it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down?” Well, it was created because the toilet uses around 8 gallons of water each time you flush. Please take time to notice the things that you do, make changes that you feel are necessary and don’t be scared of yellow water. Karesh to speak on substance abuse On April 11 at 7 p.m. in McLarty- Goodson 125, there will be a speaker named Nicola Karesh. She will be speaking on the topic of “When is it a Problem? For more information, contact Kathy Meehan, Brevard College Counselor, at ext. 2229. PLEASE RECYCLE I next year. I’ve grown up a lot since getting up, making it to class, and because of all of the responsibilities of learning how to compromise.” * Amy Cuccia MuUc Gcde^iJcHaA The Brevard College Jazz Ensemble will perform Its Annual Spring Concert on Tuesday, April 2, at 8 p.m. in Dunham Auditorium.
