Bertrand travels to S. Africa for elections
Special to the Clarion
from the BC News Bureau
Brevard College President J.
Thomas Bertrand will travel to South
Africa this month to observe the
elections there as a Fellov/ of the
National Peace Foundation and as
Visiting Scholar to the University of the
Western Cape at Capetown. Bertrand
hopes to complete work he began two
years ago in South Africa, when he
helped to formulate the role of higher
education in the troubled country’s new
society.
“I hope to observe the elections in
South Africa through the prism of the
University of the Western Cape at
Capetown, a key institution in the
formation of this new society,” Bertrand
said. Much of the intellectual work of
writing a new constitution and the long-
range planning for a new educational
system for the nation has taken place on
the university’s campus.
Bertrand will also travel to
Zimbabwe to participate in the official
opening and inauguration at Africa
University, a new United Metfiodist
university, by invitation of the
BC freshman may
compete on TV’s
‘Family Feud’
by Richard Hartogs
Clarion Staff Writer
Many of us dream of being on a
television game show. For one Brevard
College student, that dream may become
a reality.
Leonard Jackson (LJ), a freshman
from Greensboro, N.C, and his family
are doing just that! They have
auditioned twice for the Family Feud.
The auditions took place in New York,
N.Y., where U is originally from. U
and his family went to Nfew York to
audition on November 4 of last year.
His family won that round and was
asked to come back in April
The other family members who are
involved are: two cousins, LJ’s mother,
and his grandmother. The second
audition was held on April 9. LJ s
family split two rounds of the feud wi
another family. LJ’s family is expecting
a call at any time to find out when they
will be on. It may be from anywhere
from two months to two years before
they get to go on the show.
If U and his family go, then they
will have an all expense paid trip to
Hollywood, Calif., including airfare,
meals, rental car, and twenty five dollars
a day allowance. At the first audition
there is a 10% chance for families to
move on to the second audition. From
there, there is a 50% chance of making
it on to the show.
Chancellor of Afnca University and Dr.
Roger Ireson, General Secretary of the
United Methodist Board of Higher
Education and Ministry. Two years ago
Bertrand was an official guest of the
trustees of Africa University when its
first classes were organized.
In addition to his work in Africa,
Bertrand will visit Westminster College
in Oxford, England, to finalize an
exchange agreement between
Westminster College and Brevard
College. Westminster College is the
only Methodist higher education
institution in England.
