from the BC News Bureau
The Brevard College art faculty will
open a combined show of their work on
Friday evening, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. in
Brevard College’s Sims Art Gallery. The
show, which will feature the works of
Tim Murray, Bill Byers, Jo Pumphrey,
Molly Doctrow and Mary Murray, will
run through Nov. 11. The opening,
which will feature live music and
refreshments, is free of charge and open
to the public.
“Faculty shows allow students and
the community the opportunity to see
what we do as producing artists,” says
Bill Byers, Brevard College Associate
Professor of Art. “A faculty show lets
people have more direct contact with the
artist who is the teacher, and helps
provide insight into the teaching
philosophy and style ot the artist. It is
important for art teachers to
producing artists, or the teaching can be
a hollow exercise. Unless you, as an
artist, are producing artwork, you are
not fully vital as a teacher”
Byers will be exhibiting a variety
of paintings and photos, and his
colleagues will be exhibiting works as
follows: Professor of Art Tim Murray
will be exhibiting paintings, drawings
and sculpture; Instructor in Art Jo
Pumphrey will be exhibiting pamtings
and small, painted collages; part-time

South Carolina resident donates
geology samples to Brevard College
Brevard College recently acquired
geological samples for the geology
department through the efforts of BC
student Lisa Wood, a freshman from
Hendersonville.
Geology students were told that if
they attended the Henderson County
Gem and Mineral Show and checked off
minerals that they saw at the show, they
would receive extra credit. Don Meador,
a member of the Henderson County
Gem and Mineral Society who lives in
Landrum, S.C., noticed Lisa Wood, a
geology student, checking off minerals
on her list and questioned her about it.
She told him about the geology classes
at Brevard College.
As a result of their talk, Mr.
Meador offered to donate several large
slabs of fossiliferous limestone from
Kentucky. There were also large
specimens of extinct “favosites coral
from Kentucky and sandstone from
Tennessee. The fossils in the slabs are
very abundant and well preserved.
Anne Pittman, a Brevard College
geology teacher, praised Wood for her
efforts on behalf of the college.
According to Pittman, she has been
trying to obtain slabs like this for the
college for several years.
