summer trip to Austria

The Music Department announces
its third Austria Summer Arts Program
for the summer of 1995. The u-ip is
open to any enrolled student at Brevard
College who is intere.sted in classical
music, Austria and the arts. The trip
will run from May 14 (the day after
graduation) until June 11, 1995. The
cost of the four weeks in Austria,
$3,800.00, includes tuition, airfare, all
excursions, meals and lodging. Students
will be responsible for their personal
spending money. Airfare is to and from
the Atlanta airport.
Students will earn seven hours of
credit, as follows: Austrian Siudiw
(HUM 210), Music and Mu.sicians of
Austria (MUS 289) or Music
Appreciation (MUS 101), and an hour
of Mountaineering (PE 153C). Students
will travel to Vienna, Innsbruck,
Eisenstadt, Altmunster (location of ihc
Semester in Austria program) Salzburg
and other cities. The trip will be led by
Mr. David Kirby, Director of Bands
Brevard College, and Professor Margaret
Zednik, Director of Austrian Studies

Music Department to present small
ensembles in chamber music recital

The Brevard College Music
Department will present several small
ensembles in a chamber music recital on
Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 8 p.m. in Brevard
College’s Dunham Auditorium. The
program, which is free of charge and
open to the public, will feature the
Brevard College Percussion Ensemble,
under the direction of Instructor in
Music Diane Cash, and several
woodwind easembles under the direction
of InsUuctor in Music David Kirby.
The percusion portion of the
program will feature non-traditional as
well as traditional percussion
instruments. Among the works to be
performed are “Living Room Music” by
John Cage, “Cameo Suite” by Jared
Spears and “Coventry Carol,” arranged
by Daine Cash, Members of the Brevard
College Percussion Ensemble include
LeZon Miller, John Smith, Aungrae
Elliot, Collins Latimer, Derek Sandim
and Lauren Cobb.
The Brevard College Woodwind
Quintet will perform “Walking Tune”
by Percy Grainger and a classical
selection by Haydn. Members of this
quintet include Mat Hendrix, llutc; Kim
Mega, oboe; Derrick Weaver, ciarinel;
Dale McSwain, horn and Tami Kncsel,
bassoon.
Also performing at the Nov. X
concert will be the Brevard College
Clarinet Quartet with “Sounds of the
Sea,” a programmatic work by Roben
Roden. Members of this quartet are
Tonia Windham, Angie Shelton,
Jennifer Phillips and Paul Summers,
The Brevard College Saxophone
Quartet will finish the program with a
performance of movements from “Five
Miniatures” by Elaine Zajak and ‘The
Marriage of Figaro Overture” by
Mozart. Members of this quartet include
Robert Riddle, Leisha Harvey, Paul
Gerber and David Kirby.
Snow skiing classes
planned for this winter
Brevard College will be offering
snow skiing classes this winter. The
program gives you the opportunity to
develop a lifetime sport, have a great
time during the cold winter months, and
earn college credit.
Small classes grouped by ability
enable you to maximize your learning
experience while enjoying the fun of a
group. Lessons are not just for
beginners. Intermediate and advanced
skiers leam to ski parallel and control
speed on steeper terrain. Beginning
skiers develop sound fundamental skills
making skiing safer and more fun. A
series of lessons close together will
have you skiing better than you would
ever have believed.
The program includes 5 sessions of
skiing; 1 night/2 days at Appalachian
Ski Mtn., 1 day each. Sugar Mtn, and
Ski Beech, instruction with the French-
Swiss Ski College, rental equipment
(skis, boots, poles), lodging for 4
nights and ski tickets. The program is
scheduled for January 8-12, 1995.

on the first class meeting on Monday,
November 21 at 7 p.m. in Room 102,
Boshamer Gymnasium.
