Stephanie Nutting, SGA Vice
President for Judicial Board, is a 20
year old sophomore from Ft. Myers,
FI. The Judicial Board is a group of
twelve people consisting of freshmen,
sophomores, residential and commuter
students. The board is designed to
represent an equal sample of the Br
evard College student body.
To become a member of J-Board,
a student must first be recommend by a
faculty or staff member and then com
plete an interview process. The purpose
of J-Board is to offer students a forum
to appeal sanction fines. Once a case is
heard and discussed, the Board has four
choices. They may either lower, raise,
drop or allow the sanction to remain the
same.
Nutting says that cases are rarely
dropped. Also they are usually not
raised. However, if a student has made
an appointment with the Judical Board
and shows up late, or does not arrive at
all, there is a good chance the fines will

first job in Chicago was working on a
farm as a camp instructor with 6 to 17
year olds.
He has many goals and plans for
our social activities. His most important
one right now is rebuilding the base
ment of Coltrane Commons. This new
place is going to be called The Under
ground. The Underground is going to
be divide into two separate rooms. The
one room is going to be an arcade. It’s
going to be a place where you can get
away from the dorm and interact with
your peers.
The other side is The Coffee shop,
which will serve coffee from the Es
sence Of Thyme. This is going to be
place where you can socialize with your
friends, have study halls with your
classes, and interact with your teachers.
The coffee shop will even have evening
events like karoke, student and faulty
bands, and open mic nights. This all
happens on Friday and Saturday nights.
They’re going to open late, so when the
library closes, you will have a place to
go. This idea is coming right around the
comer.
Some of the other ideas that Curt
has come up with are weekend concerts
on the quad, a Holiday Expo (shopping
on campus), student and faculty activi
ties, and more interaction with the
dorms. There are still many more activ
ities he is working on. So keep a look
out for what is coming next.
Lisa Trapp, SGA Vice-President
for Social Board, is a 19 year old
sophomore from Apoka, FI. The pur
pose of Social Board is to organize
student activities on campus. Recently
Social Board has been busy organizing
the Homecoming events (see Homecom
ing article). One of the next activities
Social Board has planned is Halloween
weekend. Events will range from trick
or treating for faculty and staff children
on Jones 1st floor, a campus hay ride
with a storyteller, and a costume ball.

Lyle Alexis, Student Government
Association President, is an 18 year old
sophomore from New York. Alexis
explains that SGA exists to benefit the
students, to interest them in becoming
involved in Brevard College.
Alexis has planned activities
ranging from a Mr. Tornado pageant to
an open forum with Mayor John Peter
son. The Mr. Tornado pageant, which
will be chaired by Vivian Rivers, will
have three categories: casual wear,
anything goes, and formal wear, The
pageant will be held on Friday, Dec. 8.
Alexis feels this will be a good break
from the normal, as most pageants of
this type are generally for women.
Overall, this should be a relaxed and
interesting evening.
The forum with Mayor Peterson is
open to all students. Topics concerning
how Brevard College and the communi
ty can benefit each other will be dis
cussed.
Alexis feels that so far SGA is
getting a lot done and that things are
going better this year than they were
last year.
Powell For President?
Rob Ham
Staff Writer
Retired General Colin Powell is a
likely candidate for president in 1996.
Powell is the first African-American to
be chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Stoff
which he served under Presidents Bush
and Clinton.
His political views are a mixture
of conservative and liberal ideals. He
has said that one option the country
must consider is raising taxes to reduce
the national debt. Powell also supports
affirmative action. He is quoted as
saying, "Anyone who would suggest that
racism is a thing of the past is wrong;
people are still being denied jobs be
cause of the color of their skin."
He also strongly supports family
values and has said that he wants Amer
ica to be one big family. Some other
views that he has are against women
fighting in combat. He also opposes
letting Gays and Lesbians into the mili
tary, and he is Pro-choice towards
abortion. Despite these views, it is still
unclear what he would do if he were
elected president, or how he would do
it.
General Powell has not yet an
nounced if he is running for president
and declines any interviews concerning
his political future. However, he has
said, "I will be active at some point in
the political process; I’m not ruling it
out."
The recent publication of his new
best selling book, Mv American Joil:
mev has resulted in an increase in his
popularity. However, the book does
not say if he will run for President or
not.
If Colin Powell does run for Pres
ident, his tactics will resemble those o
Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower
was a famous general in WWII and di
not announce he was running until t e
last minute. Many feel he was the best
President in history.
