The Brevard College theater closed
its spring production on Saturday April
27. The play, “Night, Mother” by
Marsha Norman, was directed by theater
Professor Robert A. White. The two
female characters were played by Aymi
Franklin as Jessie and Emily Holbrook as
Mother. The plot of the play is an
extremely serious one that deals with two
individuals’ struggle with life, sickness,
and suicide.
The play is centered around the last
hours of Jessie’s life. Jessie is an epileptic
woman who has made a decision to end
her life through suicide. In the beginning
of the play, she informs her mother of
her plans to shoot herself in a couple of
hours with her dead father’s pistol.
Jessie’s mother does not believe the threat
made by her daughter. The play builds to
a climactic ending with Mother pounding
on the door of Jessie’s room, pleading for
her to come out, and then a shot is heard,
signaling the end of Jessie’s life.
The play was performed with no
intermission. The two actresses handled

the challenge of remaining on stage and
in character for the entire run very well.
Even though the audiences were
smaller than usual due to a lack of
advertisement, the production was a
success. The people who did come to see
the show left with a realistic insight into
the lives of Jessie and her Mother.
