8 Sports Friday. December 12, 1997 Every BC Fall Coach Wins Coach of the Year Award! by Bobby Dodenhoff This fall has been an exciting season for Brevard Athletics. All of our fall teams went to the National Tournament. Also, every fall season coach was named coach of the year. Women’s soccer coach Joe Bartlinski was named Region X coach of the year, Umbro/NSCAA South Central coach of the year, and Southeastern coach of the year. The National coach of the year will be decided in January, which will be decided among four coaches throughout the nation. Coach Bartlinski won this award last year and hopefully will win it again this year. Also, Men’s soccer coach Andy Schaefer won Region X coach of the year and Southeast district coach of the year. Both soccer coaches had great seasons and both coaches said,’’The players deserve credit for this award, when you have players that are easy to coach it makes us coaches look good.” Congratulations to both coaches on a terrific season and good luck to both next year. The True Champions Reign... Cross Country Teams Compete at Nationals by Amber Jefferies & Bobby Dodenhoff by Ryan Brevda The True Champions Reign. Who were they? The Green Nuggets, the Thunderfunk, or simply Team 3. It doesn’t matter. You can simply call us champions. The Intramural Indoor Soc cer Championship Team; which con sisted of Ryan Brevda, Chase Lindsey, Jeremy Becraft, Bob Bridges, Gavin McCormack, Tweets, and Steve Lee, was never established as a real team. That seemed to have little effect on our per formance. We went undefeated in the regular season of play, playing with ease as we set sights on the champion ship. Due to our perfect record we were given an automatic bye into the second round of the playoffs. There we had to play, but having relatively no trouble we won that game and went to the cham pionship game. Due to an unfortunate flurry from the skies the staff was not able to make their semifmal game. This caused them to forfeit that game and allow a much less deserving team make it to the finals. The team that we played in the finals was a team that had met our onslaught already once in the sea son. We punished them with a 10 - 1 victory in our first match-up, and we were intending to do the same in the championship game. That is exactly how it happened. During the champi onship game we went out to an early lead and kept the pressure on the entire game. Due to our onslaught the other team was forced to play a cheap, dirty game. This was no problem for us as we were no team to play dirty against. The game was unfortunately called early due to the physical momentum of the play. The exact score of the game is not important, but we were demolish ing the opponent when it was called early. This was a victory that meant a lot to the team and you will surely see the intramural t-shirts worn with pride around the campus (actually that should be off-campus). Thanks to all the fans who so proudly came to support the champions. The cross country teams went to National competition in Leveland, Texas for three days. Both the Men and the Lady Tornadoes did well but not as well as they had expected. Brigitte Buitron stated, “We had a diffi cult time running in the cold, we were not really used to that. The tempera ture outside at 11 ;00 am was 15 degrees. It was very hard running with the cold wind in our face. The team was not able to perform to their best because of inju ries, and that’s one thing that hurt us.” Marc Osborne says, ”We started out running too slow for the first two miles and we just couldn’t make up the ground. We ended up running as a sev enth place team. It was a fast course and we did have a lot of fun. Seeing that the temperature was 10 degrees at 9;00 am when we ran, it really hurt us. I guess we just didn’t adjust well to those kind of temperatures and winds.” The girls did well in the first half of the race. Instead of continually speeding up, they kept the same speed and pace throughout the whole race. Our cross country Tornadoes have done very well this year. They have a wonderful coach that works them hard to become the best that they can be. Coach Dave Rinker received an award for best coach of the year. He definitely earned his title and represents it well. Women’s Volleyball Makes it to Nationals d ■ t lakely Jones ascends for a spike by Bobby DodenhofT Congratulations go out to our volleyball team this year. This is only the second year Brevard College has had a volleyball team and both years the team has gone to Na tional compe- tition. This year’s team played at Utah Valley State Col lege, about ten minutes away from Salt Lake City, where they were in the top seated pool. Brevard’s opponents were #I ranked Southern Idaho, #5 Kirkwood Community College, and #8 Lee Col lege. All of the matches were fought to the end, but BC was defeated. Coach Jesse Wei said, ”It was a great experi ence to play such talented teams. The players now realize that there are great teams out there and it’s not an easy task to win a National Championship.” Although BC did not come home with a Na- t i o n a 1 Champion ship, they had noth ing to be ashamed of Blakeley Jones said, ”We had a good sea son and we improved a lot as a team because of our athletic ability.” The team did an outstanding job and put great effort into this season. Also, Jesse Wei, the volleyball coach, won Region X coach of the year.
