APRIL 1999 BREVARD COLLEGE, BREVARD, NC Look Out, Charleston; “BC 11” Are on the Way Shannon McGuigan The tremendous success of last year’s Voice of the Rivers (VOR) expedition has prompted Brevard College to assemble a second, similar expedition. This summer, 11 Brevard College students will spend 18 days traveling 289 miles of the Carolinas by river. Last month’s issue announced the 1999 Voice of the Rivers team. The four leaders and 11 students have been meeting on campus recently to prepare for the trip. On Sunday evenings, the team meets for seminars with Dr. Susan Schmidt or explores group norms with Clyde Carter. Even before the official start of the expedition, the team will have mountain biked from the Green River Gap to 1-26 and have hiked to see the Green RiverNarrows. Gary Thompson and Brian Oesch, May gradu ates, have been spending major time trip logistics: where the group will camp, the van’s route, how far VOR will go each day, and hopefully places for showers! Once again, the 1999 Voice of the Rivers summer expedition team members are Linley Bowyer, Jarvis Broom, Wendy Byerly, Laura Domin- kovic, Mandy Milligan, Joe Raymond, Shannon Riley, Molly Smith, Shawn Stevens, Erica Streich, and Alice Ufford. Alter nates, in the event a member is unable to journey, are Julie Broxton and Vanessa Thiel. BC faculty accompanying the team are Clyde Carter and Susan Schmidt. Brian Oesch and Gary Thompson, two student leaders on the journey, will provide trip logistics to earn credit for wilderness practicum. Mark Wagstaflf, Anne Pittman and Jennifer Frick will lecture the group before they leave campus. Students participating in this expedition will receive six hours of credit for WLD/EXP 350 (Wilderness Expedition), ECOL 242 (Biodiversity Training and Adventures), and ENG 399 (JournalWriting). Tripleader Susan Schmidt characterized the expedition as a trip for “average paddlers” rather than for the numerous experienced paddlers found on campus. She says that students will get fit and learn much along the way. All of the supplies the team needs will be carried with them in their kayaks. VOR members will camp along the riverbanks, spending a maximum of two or three nights in real campgrounds. The team plans to exit the gates of the College on May 15 after graduation and amid much “fanfare” according to Schmidt. (See boxed schedule.) Schmidt says the team would enjoy seeing students, families, and alumni along the way. She emphasizes that they would be VERY grateful to any kind souls willing to provide the team with a chance to shower. When the group arrives in Charleston, they will have an opportunity to relax and have ftin at Spoleto Festival. After Spoleto, the team will host a party where all are welcome to join them in celebrating the completion of the 1999 Voice of the Rivers Summer Expedition. 14 miles NC May 15: Canoe Green River (section 1) Camp on Lake Adger May 16: Portage Lake Adger Dam Canoe on Green River Camp near Pea Ridge (Hwy 108) May 17: Swap canoes for kayaks 14 miles Paddle from Hwy 108 to Broad River Junction May 18: Paddle Broad River to NC/SC state line 29 miles 1999 Voice of the Rivers Summer Expedition Schedule Pre-graduation Activities Day 1: Mountain bike from Green River Gap to 1-26 Day 2: Hike Green River Narrows Post-graduation Schedule 9 miles SC May 19: Broad River to Junction with Pacolet 5 miles flat, portage May 20: Broad River to Hwy 121/70 Portage at Lockhart May 21: Broad River to Parr Reservoir (Hwy 213) 7 miles flat, portage May 22: Broad River to Harbison State Forest May 23: Broad River to Columbia, SC Half day off, perhaps a school visit May 24: Broad River Congaree River to Swamp (Big Beaver Creek) Barbecue/shower facilities (by Westinghouse) May 25: Congaree River to Lake Marion (RR Bridge) May 26: Lake Marion Camp at Santee State Park boat ramp All flat May 27: Lake Marion Camp on Church Island All flat May 28: Camp on Lake Moultrie Hatchery WMA All flat May 29: Lock at Pinopolis Dam Cooper River to Rice Hope boat landing 8 miles flat Portage Locks May 30: Cooper River to Charleston (museum) School visit perhaps May 31/June 1: Spoleto Festival in Charleston VOR party, All welcome 29 miles 22 miles 25 miles 16 miles 8 miles 26 miles 34 miles 8 miles 21 miles 14 miles 20 miles
