December 9, 1999 SPORTS 20 Tornadoes shoot for record season The Brevard College men’s basketball team started the sea son out with a bang, winning their first three games against the Uni versity of Virginia-Wise, Caldwell Community College and Piedmont College. Because the first two games were scrim mages, they were 1 -0 starting out the season. They then hit a small rut, losing their next two games to Berry College and Trevecca Nazarene University. With an exciting win, Tor nadoes beat Barber-Scotia Col lege in a crowded home game 77- 76, with a last minute save by Keith Winder. Newcomers to the team were the high scorers, Travis Williams with 18 points and Chuck Peterson with 14 points. Ty Campbell, a second-year player and one of the team’s highest scorers, fractured his little finger and had to sit out the majority of the game. The team hung in till the end, even though two or three of their players fouled out. This game left the team 2-2 in the season. The team then went to a weekend tournament at Toccoa Falls College in Georgia where they played both Toccoa and Emmanuel Colleges. The team won the tournament. Their first game was against Toccoa, won with a score of 102- 72. At halftime Brevard had a 20 point lead over Toccoa. The whole team played exceptionally well, especially David Morgan, new to the team, who scored 22 points as well as having 7 re bounds and Kevin Cook, new to the school, who scored 18 points with 8 re bounds. The team went on to play Emmanuel the next day for the cham pionship ending in a score of 73-59. Emmanuel had come into the tourna ment undefeated. The top three scorers of the game were Peterson with 22 points from the backcourt, Archie Wah, with 13 points from the backcourt and Williams with 13 points from inside. The men were 4-2 coming out of the tournament. In the second round with Barber- Scotia College, the men were defeated. However, Brevard won their next two games against Temple Baptist College and Mars Hill College. The men overscored Temple. Brevard beat Mars Hill in an away game with a score of 84-69. There were four top scorers in the game: Peterson with 22 points, Wil liams with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Winder with 16 points and Wah with 10 points. These two games left Brevard with a season record of 6-3. Brevard has lost their last five games. The first two were lost in a tournament at Wingate University, and the others were lost to Limestone College, Pikeville College, and Gardner- Webb University. These games leave the men at 6-8 for the sea son with four more games before the Christmas Break. This is a rebuilding year for the team, since most of the play ers are new, and those that are not, are adjusting to a Coach Mike Jones, who is new to Brevard this year as well. They face the same situation all of Brevard’s teams have this year: a step up to a four- year sports division. “The team is under a lot of stress with four in jured players, especially after los ing the last five games,” said David Morgan. The team has two more home games scheduled. The first is Dec. 6 against Mars Hill, whom they have beaten once already during the present season, and the other is Dec. 16 against Berry College, whom they lost to at the beginning of the season. Next semes ter more home games are scheduled than this semester, so come out and support the Brevard Men’s Basketball team as they strive to have a successful season. Women’s basketball stronger on court Team ... Continued from Page 19 giving to your friends, teammates, is all about sacrifice and respect. However, in the face of many hard ships and disappointments these 21 ladies pulled together, took note of the past and grew from it. In every sense of the word these once strangers, now friends, are family. They have obtained their goal. Yes, battling it out on the field for 90 minutes, training for a successful season and going to Nationals in hope to win it all are the goals for just about every team. However, family is the one thing that many “teams” overlook that the Brevard College Lady Tor nadoes has not forgotten about. To be a team you have to be a family; success comes when you’re united, not individuals. This is something these young ladies have come to learn and experience over the last three months. This is what makes these young ladies and Brevard College Women’s Soccer program so very special. I tip my hat to these wonderful young ladies for being great athletes, role models and women. Wooooo-Hoooo 1...2...3...BC! BY TREVAUGHN MAYZ AND CONTRIBUTORS The Women’s basketball team put Milligan College, ranked 13th, through the hoop on Dec. 2, pushing them into overtime before the close loss of 80-74. Brandy Nelson lead the team with 27 points, with Leigh Anne Johnson right behind her with 11 points. Krista Yow made covered the court with 12 points and eight re bounds. The game went shot to shot by the half when the Lady Tornadoes kept Milligan at 33-32. Milligan only slid by Brevard with 9-3 in overtime, after the women tied the game 71-71 at the regulation’s end. Brevard will continue adding to its accomplished season with a game on Monday, Dec. 6 against Mars Hill. In previous years, this team faced adversity and uncertainty. But the Nov. victory against Barber Scotia College, 76-72, proved they’ve just begun to fight.
