April 30, 2im £RES A Tribute to Ernie Mills, Chaplain CompUed by THE CLARION STAFF Brevard College will soon lose a great as set when Ernie Mills leaves to pursue other opportunities. He feels it is time to move on, but will remain in the area. Mills has been the chaplain since 1992, as well as teacher, friend, and mentor to the many stu dents who have been graced by his presence. Mills noted, “I have learned as much from the students as I hope they have learned from me” and credits the students, faculty, and staff for his own personal growth. Faculty members echo this sentiment according to Dee Dasburg, Assistant Dean of Campus life. Dasburg will miss Mills’ presence on cam pus and the strums of his guitar filling the hallways of the Stamey Center. She has felt it a privilege to work with Mills for the past eight years and has always been awed “by Ernie’s passion for soul care.” She adds, “I really admire and respect his ability to meet people where they are.” Freshman Spencer Jones had a philosophi cal conversation with Mills regarding the writings of James Redfield. Redfield says that people are either full circles or half Photo by Jeff Headrick Ernie Mills in the Academic Quadrangle. circles. A full circle person is in control of his or her Ufe. A half circle person is out of control and heading for trouble. Jones said, “Ernie Mills is definitely a full circle.” Mills’ legendary “Off the Wall” emails were well received by many at Brevard Col lege, including senior Jessica Williams. “There were many days when I needed some encouragement and I was grateful that it came from Ernie in the form of his emails. I appreciate his enthusiasm for life and knew from the first day I met him that he was a very unique and special man.” Mills leaves Brevard College with a final word of encouragement: “Life is a journey and sometimes the journey is the destina tion.” Senior Katie Goetz recalls, “I went on a retreat my freshman year with Ernie. I didn’t know anyone and felt very out of place. Ernie immediately helped me feel at home. Just passing him on campus, Emie always has time for a smile and lifts my mood.” Junior Kate Wiley remarks, “Ernie’s greet ings and smiles as we passed each other will be gready missed.” 2002 Graduation Activities Schedule FRIDAY, MAY 10* 10am Graduation Rehearsal, Dunham Mu sic Center Followed by Procession of Can didates for Graduation and College Faculty to the Academic Quadrangle 11:30am Picnic following rehearsal. Sophomore Lindsey McLaughlin says of Mills, “I’ve never been to a school where someone sings and plays the guitar next to you while going through the line in the caf eteria. He has a smile that is contagious.” The sentiments of many students are well described by Noelle Avina, who remarks, “Ernie is one of the wisest people I’ve ever met. He takes his time and energy to help us think and grow as people. He is very spe cial, greatly appreciated, and will definitely be missed.” Good luck, Ernie! We will miss you! Editorial by TY HARBOUR Editor-in-Chief For those of you who have no clue who I am, then let me take the time to let you in on one of my little secrets. I happen to love this time of the year. School is almost over, the weather is hot, and the women! Now, I’m trying very hard not to invite sexual ha rassment charges or groups of women to burn me at the stake, but how can you get away with what little you wear in the sum mer? I have to applaud every single woman out there who can show so much self-confi dence by wearing things you wear in the stam mer. Guys, you know what I’m talking about. Well, I have to slow myself down and sum this up by saying that I love summer. Let’s switch gears and talk about another exciting topic for a certain group. And that is for you graduating seniors. I congratulate every single one of you for making it through these past four to seven years of college and now you all get to enter the real world. All of you now have something to look forward to. Bills, jobs, marriage, houses, kids. Wow, bad food and cramped dorm rooms doesn’t sound half-bad now. But that’s just my opin ion, I could be wrong.
