Staff Writer
Kari Comfort, Assistant Dean of
Campus Life and Student Activates,
is a new addition to our campus this
semester. She moved from Dubuque,
Iowa where she worked as an Area
Coordinator at University of
Dubuque.
Kari graduated from Ferris State
University with a B.S. in Recreation
Management/Outdoor Education
and from Minnesota State Univer
sity, Mankato with a M.S. in Experi
ential Education. Comfort heard
about the position available here at
Brevard College through
HigherEdJobs.com, and wanted to
move to North Carolina to be closer
to her boyfriend in Winston Salem.
Comfort said, “I was pretty excited
because it was very outdoorsy. And
that is definitely stuff that I like. 1
was pretty excited about the
opportunity.” Comfort says that she
loves it here and she is excited to go
out and hike.
As the Assistant Dean of
Student Activates, she has many
ideas for C.A.B. She says, “First we
need more involvement and more
participation.” She will post signs
about when meetings are going to
occur, emails, and word of mouth. We
need people to be involved because
activities do not happen unless people
are involved,” says Comfort.
As the Assistant Dean of Campus
Life, Comfort is in charge of the
Villages. She says, “My role is because
they are upper classman if they need
something they can come talk to me. I
want people to feel free to come talk to
me. 1 would definitely like to help
students understand the policies and
procedures. If 1 have to meet with a
student then I have to go by what the
College has set up for policies and
procedures. If I see it, hear it. smell it I
have to take care of it. 1 am not going
to be out looking for stuff to happen. I
got better things to do. But if 1 know of
it I have to take care of it because that
is my job.”
She asks that if students have any
ideas, to feel free to e-mail her at
rnmforka@.brevard.edu or go talk to her
in campus life.

The Brevard/Transylvania Human Relations
Council hosted a celebration of the life and dream
of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the Brevard College
Porter Center for Performing Arts l^onday, January
17th.
The memorial opened with a visual excerpt
from the Southern Poverty Law Center’s film
“Mighty Times,” which showed a number of clips
from King’s life, including his perseverance for
non-violent protests and sit-ins. The song “Lift
Every Voice and Sing” and a collection of readings
from King’s famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail”
immediately followed the selection.
“Just as Dr. King said himself, ‘justice delayed
is justice too long denied,”’ Brevard College
Chaplain Rev. Shelly Webb said. “Our college
family and the community of Brevard experienced
just how essential it is to be open to true commu
nity today, living out the hope that Martin held,
honoring the chance to know each one as beauti
ful, and talented human beings with stories to tell
and celebrate.”
Two skits were performed throughout the
night as well. The Rise and Shine Freedom School
presented “The Eagles Who Thought They Were
Chickens,” a musical drama which told the tale of
an eagle who rose above the masses for equal
rights. The Brevard Middle School Drama then put
on “No Labels,” a skit about coming together as
one, and ridding the world of racial categorization.
Finally, the ceremony ended with the Brevard
High School Chorus’ rendition of “I Have Been to
the Mountain,” a recital that received a standing
ovation from the immense audience which filled
both levels of the auditorium.
The event marked the nineteenth year smce
former President Ronald Reagan declared the day a
national holiday in 1986. King was bom January
15,1929 and died April 4,1968. He was 39 years
old.
