Scabies return to campus, infest Beam Residence Hall
By Adam Beeson
Managing Editor
Two months after Jones Residence Hall
was infected with the pimple-like reaction
caused by scabies, another outbreak has
occurred in Beam Residence Hall, where
three people have been diagnosed with the
rash.
According to Brevard College school
nurse Susan Martin, scabies is caused by a
mite (very small insect) and spreads rapidly
under crowded conditions or where there
is prolonged skin to skin contact with
people. Martin said that anybody can get
scabies.
“The college is being proactive in let
ting you [the students] know about this in
order for you to be informed enough to take
wise steps to care for your health,” Martin
said.
Once infected, the following symptoms
will occur:
Pimple-like irritations, burrows or rash
of the skin most commonly found in the
webbing between the fingers, the skin folds
of the wrist, elbow, or knee; the penis, the
breast or shoulder blades.
Intense itching, especially nt night and
over most of the body will occur.
Sores on the body caused by scratch
ing may appear. These sores can sometimes
be infected by bacteria.
Everyone exposed to scabies must
wash all clothing, bedding, and towels used

BC considers new
football program
By Adam Beeson
Managing Editor
Brevard College recently decided to investigate the possibility of
football as an intercollegiate sport, on the principle that adding new
programs will increase a steadily declining student population.
In December 2004, the trustees appointed an Athletic Sub-Commit
tee to organize meetings, investigate the program, and determine the
feasibility of beginning football at Brevard College.
The committee consists of six trustees and five faculty members,
including President Drew Van Horn and Athletic Director Gil Payne. The
first meeting began with these assumptions:
